Berak and I have hashed out the "68re" for quite some time now. I say no such thing exists. My Dodge zone sales manager, zone service manager, and the other higer up's I am in direct phone contact with on a daily basis say the Aisin AS68RC will be used in the chassis cabs, and the pick-ups. I may have to eat my words come January 1 2007, but I doubt it. I trust my zone staff at Chrysler, more than anybody on Allpar, no offense.

I attended two seminars given by Mr. Dennis Hurst, Executive Director of Engineering at Cummins, Inc. He mentioned that the new 6.7 will have reduced power in the Chassis/Cab vehicles because these lower levels provide better fuel economy. The Chassis/Cab's are designed more for commercial buyers that are not as interested in the Horsepower Wars, as much as the pick-up buyers. They are most interested in the best fuel economy.

We were told that the new Aisin 6-speed auto. will be found ONLY in the Chassis/Cab configuration.

As of 1/1/07, the new, DC built, 68-RE will be found in pick-ups, ONLY. The fact that the 68RE exists has been qualified by a couple of TDR members that either work at, or are affiliated with the plant that builds them. They have said that this new trans will be quite a bit heavier-duty than the 48RE. One of the engineers at the plant said that he was buying one as soon as it became available.

I have not seen or heard any "for sure" numbers on the HP levels of the post 1/1/07, 6.7's in the pick-ups. However, Mr. Hurst did say that we should be pleasantly surprised at the final results.

Which still leaves the rhetorical question - Why two 6-speed automatics?

If DC has internally developed the 68RE, why would they send cash to an outside vendor to purchase the Aisin transmission? The greatest return on investment would be to use the 68RE in both applications to provide the volume necessary to reach the break-even point as quickly as possible. I would expect the profits to be higher on an internally-manufactured transmission versus an outside purchase as well, so why the Aisin if the 68RE exists?

RustyJC,

That's a very good question.

All that I've heard indicates that there will be two, different, transmissions. Why? I just don't know. I agree, it doesn't seem to make a lot of "financial sense" for DC to provide two transmissions.

The only thing I can think of is that the Chassis/Cab will have a much greater carrying capacity than the pick-ups will, therefore, requiring a stronger transmission. I'm only guessing on that one, though.

One of the reasons for the two transmissions is cost. The Aisin in the commercial cab and chassis lineup is $2295.00 extra cost option and it has a PTO outlet. The 68RE unit is produced in house at DCX Kokomo Indiana transmission plant and is in no way related to the Aisin unit. I am quite sure it will not be a $2200.00 option. I know it is hard to explain, but the commercial chassis are going to be their own trucks with options and items that simply will not be available on pickup trucks mainly due to the fact that there are going to be other models of these commercial units in the future.

I don't know if this info applies to the new ISB going into the dodge, but I found this info on the cummins website. Granted, it is shown for medium duty trucks, but it is still the 2007 ISB. Take a look:

2007 Cummins ISB - Medium Duty Trucks

Forget about the HP ratings, check out the Torque ratings below: 520-750 lb-ft

The superior performance of the ISB comes from a constant flow of high-pressure fuel, injected with precise timing for optimum burn efficiency. Regardless of engine speed, the pressure inside the common-rail fuel system does not fluctuate. An increased number of injection events per cycle results in an ISB that runs stronger and quieter than ever before, with more horsepower and torque on the road than any other engine in its class.

Specifications.

Advertised Horsepower 200-325 hp 150-242 kW
Peak Torque 520-750 lb-ft 705-1117 N•m
Governed Speed 2600 rpm
Clutch Engagement Torque 350 lb-ft 475 N•m
Number of Cylinders 6
Oil System Capacity 4.5 U.S. gallons 17.03 liters
System Weight 1,190 lb 540 kg
Engine (Dry) 1,150 lb 522 kg
Aftertreatment* 40 lb 18 kg

The Aisin will cost DC a lot more to put into a truck and probably is a stronger unit than the 68RE will be or needs to be.

On a unrealted note, It looks like (from the fuel filter TSB someone posted) that the first 6.7 C&C units will not have the particulate filter.

So like I said before, the "ultimate" truck may be an early model 6.7 C&C with the Aisin tranny. Too bad they don't have a MegaCab option.

Hey hey, friendly maybe? But knowledgeable? I think you are buttering me up for an extra sweet deal. As I said before, I may have to eat my words come January 1 2007, and I will if I am wrong. But everyone at the zone office tells me Aisin in pick-ups as well as cab&chassis. Maybe everybody at Chrysler is wrong, heck, I don't know? I just am more prone to believing them as to somebody on Allpar as my people at the zone have never given me bad info before. I guess only time will tell?

From KCJackson on TDR:

It's official! 6.7L: 350/650 and 68RFE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 1 is DC press kit day, and they are already revealing the January 2007 6.7 liter Cummins for the pickups will be rated at 350 hp @3000 rpm (it actually says 3013 rpm) and 650 lb-ft @ 1500 rpm. The 68RFE will also be available at the same time.

Ready for the kicker?

The engine is de-rated for the MANUAL transmission - only 610 lb-ft. @ 1400 rpm... the total opposite of the second-gens.

Engine is 408 cid, 6690cc. Bore and stroke is 4.21 x 4.88.

68RFE ratios:
1 - 3.231:1
2 - 1.837:1
3 - 1.410:1
4 - 1.000:1
5 - 0.816:1
6 - 0.625:1
R - 4.444:1

G56 carries over unchanged. Current 325/610 5.9 liter engine and 48RE automatic end production in December, last orders will likely be November 1st, give or take.

As previously announced, the 3500 chassis cab will be rated at 305/610 for both the G56 and the Aisin AS68RC automatic.

Aisin ratios:
1 - 3.74:1
2 - 1.96:1
3 - 1.34:1
4 - 1.00:1
5 - 0.77:1
6 - 0.63:1
R - 3.54:1

No changes to axle ratios... just the 3.73 and 4.10 diffs.

Where is he getting his info? TDR doesn't say anything about it yet. And I just checked all my Chrysler mail and there is nothing to that affect.

I don't know, I just Googled "2007 Dodge Ram 68re" and came up with nothing more than a few links to forums where the rumored "68RE" was being discussed. If Dodge released it to the press today, nobody is carrying it yet. They usually send us a copy of the press release to my private mail on DealerConnect and I got nothin. Again, not doubting, just haven't seen any proof.
