Maybe Lift Pump?

Started truck, died when I tried to take off. Restarted after 2 tries, went about 50 ft and died again. After about 4 tries it started and I drove about 1 mile and died again. Restarted and drove about 3 miles and died again. Restarted again and made it home about 2 miles. All the while this was happening, my prodigy brake controller was goin crazy flashing all sorts of codes. I wasn't towing anything. Pulled these 3 codes, P0628,P0237,P0193. Could the P0628 code cause an electrical mal function in the brake controller plug in? The dealership service writer told me on the phone this morning, that it sounded like the LP went south. They just left with it for the dealership, but was wondering what you guys think.
Thanks Wayne

It is your lift pump. Very common on the 03-04.5 with the canister mounted pump. It is covered under warranty if you are within mileage, but the will install a retro-fit kit witch moves the pump to an in-tank unit. The in-tank have been goo so far, but if you plan on modding any farther it is best to go aftermarket for less then $500 with a Glacier, Fass, Eliminater set-up with will handle more fuel demands and HP. By doing this you relocate the pump to your frame rail. Depends on the future of your truck and what you have planned.

What is the best way to remove a canister mounted pump? Do you remove the starter and go at it from underneath or can you remove the pump from the top. Any tips would be helpful.

I was able to remove one from the top and the others had to work from the bottom. My arms are a little long so I could get it from the bottom. You do not have to remove the starter at all just takes a little paientence. Should be 3-4 bolts.believe i remember right it was a atorx bit i believe, but not real positive. Has been a while since I did my Glacier set up.

We were climbing a long grade, glassing for elk at low speed in my buddie's 04.5 CTD last week. Near the top, I asked, "Are you doing that with the pedal?" Engine was gently surging -- lose about 200rpm for 2-3 seconds and then regain it. Over and over again. He said, "No. I was just wondering about about that."

At the end of the day, his lift pump ran long and loud. We got tired of waiting for it to stop and fired the engine. Seems okay still on level roads, but we schedule at trip to the local dealer anyway. 50050 miles.

Dealer called yesterday, said he had to hotshot a new pump from Houston. Said it should be ready today. Should this retro in-tank pump hold up to a quad xzt towing box? If anything , that's what I would want to do in the future. I've been sorta waiting for this pump to go south anyway. Just glad it happened close to home and not on a trip with 5er in-tow.

That new in tank pump should hold it just fine if that is all you want to do.

Thanks for the replies. UPDATE!! Picked truck up from dealer tonite. Seems to be running good. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems to have alot more pep. I guess the old pump may have gotten weaker as time went on and I just kinda got used to it. Is this possible? I always thought, when you lose a pump, there is no warning.

Usually when you loose a pump it just goes but the new trucks with the CP3 they kind of stutter out because the CP3 can pull fuel byitself the lift pumps just keep from starving it. The 03-04.5 lift pump canister pumps were bad becasue they had to pull the fuel from the tank as with the new design they push the fuel to the CP3.
