Manual Transmission Oil Change
When I bought my truck (03 2500 - 5spd Manual 2wd) I was offered free tires for life as long as I had my truck serviced at that dealer. Well, when my 30,000 mile check up came they told me that because I had a manual I did not have to change the tranny oil until 100,000. Again at 60,000 they stated this and wrote it in my book. So today I went to have my 90,000 mile check up and the guy tries to tell me that I have to have this done and was supposed to do it every 30,000 miles. I told him to show me where this is stated (it clearly says automatic tranny fluid changes at 30,000). He could not find it the manual so he called the service manager and he also couldn't find it. Needless to say I'm going to wait until 100,000 miles. Do any of you know the correct interval?

Phil, they say the 6 speed is a lifetime fill, so its not too far fetched to say the 5 speed is too.
FWIW, I changed the oil in my 6 speed today for the third time. I usually change it out when I get under the truck and change out the diffs - its only 4 quarts of oil and not difficult to do. It always shifts much smoother with the new oil. BTW, looking at your sig block - you sure you've got 3.90's in it? Factory gears were 3.73's or 4.10's. |
I do my 5spd at 30k, in fact I just finished doing mine. The fluid has darkened up a bit by then, and it gets a bit harder to go into gear. Unfortunately the dealer wanted $23 a qt for fluid, he was a bit ashamed at the price increase and dropped it, but it was still $19 a qt. Next time I'll look at getting it thru Standard Transmission.

I've been meaning to change it 3.73, thank you for the replies. What brand and weight of gear oil are you guys using

I changed my 5sp every 25k and it needed it! Ams severe gear 75w90 worked good but a little stiff when cold. The book doesn't say it but 20-30k when towing often is good. Craig
