low sulfur or ultra low sulfur?

Hi, I just got a new 07-5.9 and was wondering which fuel would be better for the 5.9 In my town I can get either. The pump with low sulfur diesel says not for 07 or later but I don't think it means the 5.9. It doesn't say to use ultra low in the manual.

Cool

Congrats on the new Rig and Welcome.

The 5.9 will burn either. I am sure someone will chime in regards to lubricity and additives. Me, I use ULSD with 2 cycle oil.

Wow, I thought all fuel stations had to switch to USLD by some time last year. From what I understand LSD has better lubricity. I dont think there would be any advantage to use USLD, but I could be wrong.

Thanks shonne and 3500. There is a home fuel dealer that has a pump with over the road low sulfur diesel.

Man, I wish I could find some LSD here. It lubricates much better than the ULSD. I want the regular diesel back!!

The LSD is better, no doubt. Good for the truck, bad for the enviroment. If your 07 has a diesel particulate filter (new emission standards), you can only run ULSD. it will clog with LSD.

How do you know if it is a particulate filter in an 07-5.9? It doesn't say anything about it in the manual.

I know around here and in a lot of other areas that even though it says "LOW SULFUR DIESEL" that it is really the ultra low. It depends on the area that you live in. They arent required to say if it is ultra low but they might be required to carry only ultra low. Check it out

Are you talking about the DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER on the exhaust??? A 5.9 no matter what year it is does not have any kind of particulate filter on the exhaust. Or at least i havent ever heard of one nor has it ever been mentioned at any of my training classes. A 5.9 L should only have a CAT, MUFFLER, and on the newer models most have a resonator.

I thought it was illegal to run LSD in an 07 according to the sticker on the pump. I'll have to check the next time I fill up.

I miss the thicker smoke the LSD gave my stock truck.

No 5.9's have a DPF. The law stated that all diesels produced after 1/1/07 had to have a DPF. That's when they switched over to the 6.7; Ford to the 6.4 and GM to the LMM.

Dieselnick is right. The truck has to be manufactured after 1/1/07. My truck is an 07 model year but was manufactured in 2006 and has the 5.9. So I'm able to run LSD if I can find it. The LSD would give me about 1 more mpg than the ULSD. I wish I could find more of it now!

When I got my truck in Feb 07 I specifically searched out a 5.9 so that I could stay away from the DPF and so that I could run LSD if available. I also went for the 5.9 because there is and probably always will be a lot more performance parts available.

Also, the 07 5.9's come with a card in the owners manual explaining that it is ok to run LSD in them.
