Letting a truck sit?
Letting a truck sit?
Hello everyone I guess to start with, new to the site...
Considering probably a '05-'06 2500 5.9, but am concerned as sometimes my truck sits a 4-6 weeks without much if any use and was wondering if it could bring up any potential problems just sitting in the garage? It'd sit more in the winter.
Also rather than starting a new thread, any significant differences in the '04-06' Model Years? Was considering going newer, but would like to keep the price down and will more than likely not be pulling anything larger than a 20' horse trailer.
Thanks in advance....

Hi Cal,
Welcome to the site.
I prefer the late 05 as it has metal end caps on the inter-cooler and you get the G56 6 speed tranny, the 06's went to a TIPM which requires a dealer reset if you tow a trailer with shorted wires.
Setting for a week is not a problem anything longer than that you might want to pull the battery cables or run a trickle charger. Max out the tire pressure and or elevate for winter storage to prevent flat spots. Top off the tanks to prevent condensation and add some additives to the #2 and you should be fine.

Thanks for the info and the welcome
Just found an '07 in the right price range with the 5.9. How would this compare with the earlier 5.9's?
Kinda always been a Ford guy, so the whole Dodge thing is kinda new to me. Just can't afford a new Ford and not interested in anything other than a 7.3 and not much around that's in decent shape.

The 5.9 in the 07 is fine, the TIPM problem I told you about can be wired around with one of these:

Have the dealer run the VIN for any repairs / recalls you might try a car fax as well.. Make sure the ECM has the latest flash on it.
I can relate to the ford persuasion as I drove one for 25 yrs.. The Cummins engine is what these trucks are about..

The regular duty of my '06 lately has been holding down the concrete in my driveway. I might drive it once a month or so but it can sit as long as six weeks sometimes. I've had no issues with it sitting. When I drive it I do drive it though.
Well it's reassuring to hear some of this. About all I use my full size truck for is to haul my horse trailer, last few months it's been getting a lot of use but there's times when I don't hardly touch it and had heard a few wives tails I guess about letting a diesel truck sit for extended periods of time without use.

I have an SUV and my Cummins and both have really low miles - I just make it a point to drive them at least one day a week and have had no problems with either vehicle - after 5 years of this routIne. Maybe it's easier to do something like this instead of letting one sit for too long, and worrying about something bad happening from non-use? Just a thought
