Just A Quickie Injector Thread

Was sitting at the local watering hole yesterday afternoon talking with a buddy about my 2003 CTD "hard-start" issue and after about 7 or 8 beverages we were challenging Einstein's thoughts. This fella has been following my issues from the get go so he knows the different things I've tried and the quirky symptoms that my truck exhibits. We were on the topic of injector(s) leaking through the return flow port as a real candidate for the solution. That's a mechanical failure. Now I know that the injectors are "electronically pulsed", but if my hard start is due to excessive injector return flow, why would it be hard to start sometimes and not hard to start at other times?? I just wonder how can the injector have excessive return flow one moment and not the next ??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm................... - curtis

good though curtis ive wondered the same thing, buddies coming to get his truck to day [if youve followed my post aswell] went out minute ago and while cranking i watched the tack, it only would turn 150 -175 rpm and not fire, grabbed to ol charger again hooked it up on 35 amps went to crank and the second it hits 200 r's it fires i thinking a or both bad batt's, its been on trikle charge pleaty last couple days, is there any way the ecm has to see a min. rpm before a fire, remeber its not the good ol 12 valve days that if the starter budged it cranked- anyone with me on this im going to send him to wally world for new batts. see what happens, thier factory 04's now

curtis- I'm not a mechanic at all, but I went thru this same type of stuff last winter that you're dealing with. It turned out to be exactly what you are saying about the return flow on the injectors... wrong fuel filters was the supposed culprit in my case. anyways, I think the engine cranks until it finds that cylinder w/ enough fuel in there to compress and fire.(the rest of the injectors are returning too much fuel). Like I said, I'm no mechanic by any means, but this is all I could come up with.

maybe injectors are the answer for all of us with this prob. unless theres someone thats had them changed with out this resloving the issue, any heard of this. sounds like it must be sticks, if we must change them its a good time to upgrade for some extra power too i quess?

You'd be amazed at the price of extra horsepower injectors compared to stock injectors... or should I say pleased :) whatever you do, don't buy your replacements from the shop at $500 apiece unless your warantee is covering it.

I've seen deals on +50HP injectors, injector nozzles, rebuild service, etc.....You can get New Bosch stock injectors at several places for about $385 each which is WAAAAY better than going back to the you know who...........

am i missing something 385 x 6 = 2310 is this a good deal? i got a set of extruded honed 100hp inj. for my 99 cummins for around 500.00 back then. you have to meen 385 for the set,

Stock.......the beauty of 2nd generation CTD's is that the injectors are cheap. Google some 3rd generation pricing........dude, they are very pricey.....$600 each from Dodge.
