Just did Tranny Fluids...Have a Question
 

So today I decide to change out the fluids in my NV5600. at teh 20K mile mark(Brother in law thinks I'm crazy for doing it so soon. To him, that's something you do at 100K. He even worked at a Dodge Dealership in service department). Dodge manual says that it will take 4.5liter (4.7 quarts) for a dry fill.

I drive the truck around for 30 or so minutes to get it warm, then take it home and pull it into the garage (not exactly flat, but closests I'm going to get). First, take out the drain plug. Second, take out bottom PTO cover bolt. I let the truck drain for 30 minutes. I didn't have any RTV or a PTO Gasket (forgot to get those while at store) and wife is gone. Crap!! Any way, I let tranny drain for at least 30 minutes. When I get under it, it hardly even drips (maybe once every 30 seconds). So I figure its good and empty. Put back in bolt, torque to 30 ft/lbs. Then I start putting in Penzoil Syncromesh (please don't lecture me on synthetics. They are coming). I finally JUST get in 4 quarts before its full. I know its full because at that point, any I squirt in all comes back out the fill hole.

So that means I put in .7 quarts less than what is listed in the manual? Did I do something wrong? Is this normal?

The manual says 4.7 QTS for a DRY fill - I believe the "dry" part is key here. The transmission may retain 0.7 QTS (won't totally drain).

I'd run it around the block a few times and check the level again, if it's low fill it, if it's not, drive it!

I'm sure you are fine. Next time you do the job, remove the drivers side PTO cover and clean the magnet. You will be glad you did.

great. That's what I'm wanting to hear. This is the first time I've messed with the tranny on this truck so wasn't quite sure what to expect.

After removing the bottom bolt on the PTO cover to drain, is it necessary/recommended to use loctite or a sealer when you re-install the bolt? I need to change mine soon but I was curious about that. If I take the PTO cover off completely, is there a reusable gasket like on the diffs or do I need to use some RTV? If so, what one/color to use? Thanks.

They come from the factory without gaskets. You can buy gaskets from any truck parts store. Six bolt PTO's are a standard size. They will ask you if the gasket is for a cover or an accessory...blah blah. It doesn't matter, any 6 bolt PTO gasket from any transmission will work. Be very careful tightening the bolts or you will squeeze out the gasket.

All that said, the RTV you get from the Dodge dealer will be black. I have also used the orange stuff from Permatex with good results.

I used RTV for the PTO cover seal and also on the bolt threads. And yes, mine only took 4 qts before running out for the fill hole.

To properly drain the .7 extra fluid you have to raise the rear of the truck a little bit to get the oil out of the tail shaft section of transmission.
I changed mine twice and never raised the rear, no problems. And yes, it only takes between 4-5 quarts on a refill.

just changed mine out today, took about 4 and a quarter quarts, all she would take, filled her with redline mtl.
