I dont know if this is a usual thing for diesels or not, but i have never noticed it. but it may just be me being new to diesels and being worried that i am going to have a huge expense when i dont need one.
I noticed it a little bit after i bought the truck that when it has been running for more than 10 or so minutes, when i turn it off, it sounds like the belts are getting jerked to a screeching halt. I dont know if i should be able to hear a little screech everytime i turn the truck off after it has warmed up.
my buddy drove a 07 the other day, and when he turned it off after driving it for a while, it did not do it. So i dont know if something is messed up, or if it is usual.
Thanks a bunch.

I had the exact same screech sound from mine too. It's the belt. I changed to a "gaitor-back" belt and never heard it again. It's normal with the type of serpentine belts the factory puts on.
Sounds kinda cool huh?

That little chirp that you hear is from the belt. The Cummins engine has done this since day one, all the way back to 1988 or 1989 when they first started putting these engines into Dodges. I'm pretty sure that it even does it on all the other installations that use the B series engine. It may sound annoying, but it actually doesn't do anything to the belt regarding to wear or longevity. It is just the Mighty Cummins making an announcement that it is okay for all the chevy's and fords to come out of hiding.
That is the alternator belt coming to a sudden stop. It's NORMAL NORMAL NORMAL. It gets worse with the AC on when you shut down. It may not happen all the time but it will happen some time.
I had 165,000 on my belt and it did it since day 1. I only changed the belt, because I do it annually. It was in pretty good shape and could have went for alot more miles.
My '06 did the chirp routine when I first got it. But I have not heard it in a long time - under any conditions. I was just camping this weekend and had several other Ram ctd's near and I heard the chirp when they shut-down. Made me wonder, too, if somehitng was up with mine that it no loner does it. pcm
