interesting chart on tire wear

http://www.us.pirelli.com/web/techno...d/default.page

I did the converstions from 70kph to 110.

70kph=44mph=100% life
80kph=50mph=85% life
90kph=56mph=74%life
100kph=63mph=60%life
110kph=68mph=50%life.

Always wondered about tire wear and speed as more speed is more heat and friction. I know on the Bugatti veyron at 240mph tires will last about 15 minutes so it makes sence lol

i never knew speed degraded a tires life by that much! Although, in my own experiences with speed...i've had tires last for years that were driven at 150 mph for brief bursts. I wonder if Pirelli's chart is true for a specific kind of tire? Or all tires in general.

i would guess that that is for a specific tire compound, our motorcycle race tires go from 3 laps to over 100 miles depending on carcass and compound construction. the q tires go out hot get 1 lap warm up 1 flier and are junk on the in lap. fun way to blow $350-400 huh. street tires last thousands of miles and heat cycles. all in how they are made.

I think its under continuous speed for the life of a tire. Remeber life could be 3k miles or 100k miles. I have heard of guys getting 4500-5k miles out of the same tires I had on my bike and I get like 2k-2500 and I dont do burnouts. I would bet its close for all tires, just depends on the compound what the true life is. Blasts up to 150 would hurt the tire but not as much as running for a hour at 150mph.

One more thing what is the life of a toyo AT, heard its something like 35-40k. I used to drive 70-75 on the highway all the time (before fuel went sky high) and I would be willing to bet at 10k miles there at 50%, so wonder if I slow down will I get more milage out of the last half.

The life of the tire also depends on what kind of a rig it's on. The more torque you are sending to them, the harder it is on them. Add in a little trailer hauling or driving on dirt or caliche roads, and you have a recipe for early tire wear. That is why you see so many diesel trucks with the back tires looking like a racing slick, and the fronts looking almost brand new. So don't be surprised when your buddy who has that gas powered Ram brags about his 45K he has on his truck, and you're doing good to squeak out 20K.

Ohh I agree with you, hard turns, brakeing and throttle imputs will wear faster. I know first hand from bikes how much faster being agressive will kill them.

I was mearly looking at this from a heat wear stand point. Doing 55 mph instead of 70 is a win win. 25% less tire wear and better mpg, no doubt all other factors will change wear.

But if you dont jack rabbit each light not stop the rig in 50 feet every time and make turns slower and easier then the sport car in front of you they will last longer. IF you are a highway person I bet you can see a massive increase from driveing slower.
