I think my nv5600 is overheating.

Hey there. Has anyone ever but a temp gauge into the nv5600 and if so where. I pulled up the hill today for about 5 miles towing about 10,000lbs and the truck started smelling hot but my coolant temp gauge said is was ok. Truck seems to be running great engine wise.

How hot do these tranny's get?

I crawled under the truck and couldnt even touch the bottom of the tranny it was so hot and it has been getting harder to shift latly.

I have about 240,000 miles on her

Any help would be great.

Does anyone recommend someone up here in Washington to rebuild this tranny.

Thanks

My 2001.5 runs about 160F-170F range on the highway empty in the summer----pulling the 12k fiver it runs closer to 200F,210F in the hills. The sender is mounted on the side in a Fastcooler/PTO cover.Air temp plays a big part as in winter temps(-200) i can run empty on the highway and the guage barely moves off of 100F.I also run 1 extra quart as recommended by most rebuilders to help with the oil starvation on some of the bearing/synco's in the hillier areas.

So there is not a place to run a temp probe into the casing.
I dont know what a fastcooler is?
I also didnt think the manual trannys got that hot. I have never smelled anything hot before when running empty and when I started up the hill in stop and go traffic my tranny seem to sound a little funny at start up. I couldnt really find any info on this forum on what people do for there rebuilds. What are the questions you ask a tranny guy to make sure he is rebuilding it right.
Thanks

when was the last time you checked the level in it? it should alway be a liter overfull. A fastcooler replaces the PTO cover with an aluminum finned deal. that adds fluid capacity and aides in radiating heat through the fins.

I had the oil changed about 5000 miles ago when it started to get hard at the shifting. It helped a little bit but this overheated smell that came from the truck makes me think the tranny is going. I am not sure how you tell untill something breaks. This is a work truck so I try and plan for my down time if I can. So if its going I would rather change it out then wait till I am stuck on the road.
Is there other after market things folks do to these tranny's?

I got it from the dealership. They said it needed something special. When I paid the price I was wondering about how special it was!!!
Will any tranny shop be able to rebuild the NV5600?

I just was wondering if you use the right fluid as you mentioned hard shifting, sounds like you have the right stuff.

Coolant temp has nothing to do with trans temp, there is no exchanger. Did you use the correct fluid? I would change the fluid again when you install the coolers. I have some coolers but have never installed them. www.quad4x4.com also has a filter kit which they say will collect the brass from the syncros. Overfill the trans from the shift tower inside the truck. I add 1qt of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer.

Guess I type too slow.......
You can also get the same fluid from a chevy dealer or at autozone which should be cheaper.

Contact this guy: msellers@blumenthalmfg.com about a good rebuilder in your area. http://www.blumenthalautomatics.com/contactus.html

How do you get into the shift Tower. DO you fill from inside your truck by pulling the rubber boot off? I will look into the filter kit on there website and see how it works
Thanks

The console comes of, you have to remove the two shift boots, the TC one just pops out. The shifter one is held in by 4 screws, maybe 6 The there should be 6 screws that hold the two in the shifter hole, two in the TC hole, and one under each cup holder. Then the plastic just slips up,Then there is 6 screws that hold the rubber boot to the floor for the shifter, remove those, and you will see 4 bolts that hold the shift to the tranny, remove those and the stick comes right out.

What does it smell like? Could it be a slipping clutch or an oil leak that is running over something hot - exh pipe or manifold etc. I drilled and tapped the PTO cover for a wet well and sensor. Mine gets to ~225 in the summer. Don't expect to be able to hold your hand on it. I use 6 qts. Another way to get it in is to use a piece of plastic tubing on the lube bottle and squirt it in thru one of the top PTO bolt holes. Craig
