Sorry folks, I know this has been asked before. I read a thread about 3 months back on how to cycle the key & odometer reset. Some way to turn the key and see the engine hours on the odometer display. I even tryed it back in January. I can not find it (I know it's operator error). But does someone else remember, let me know.

 

05 You just turn the key to the on position and then hold the trip button down for like 5 seconds and it will switch from the trip meter to the hour meter. I think it's the same on the 06 but not absolutly possitive.

I'll try it tonight thanks. ...........I was holding the trip key & turning. See two different codes and the speedometer moves around. I don't think I need to be there.

 

what is a good hour/mile ratio? more miles to the hour the better right?

 

If I remember right 30 miles per hour or better was pretty good. Getting in the lower 20's was a lot of idle. I wish I could have found that post, there was a lot of information on that. I believe it was in January. I am too dumb to find it.

 

will it reset your trip meter by doing it?

 

I turned the key to run THEN pushed the trip & held, for 5 seconds. Worked great. To answer above question, no it does not reset anything that I know of. It allows you to see the hours on the engine. Keep in mind it runs when ever the key is in run mode, like any other hour meter. When you do this it shows "hours 152" in mine.

 

will this work on a Y2K too??

 

Cummins considers anything less than 35mph avg severe duty.

I don't think they had this feature until 03.

 

So, when I hold the trip button for 5 seconds, it get the following:
5 12.2 / . 28.3 / C 44.7

 

You need to turn the key to the on position, THEN press and hold the trip button.

Don't hold it when you turn it to the on position. Those are some sort of computer codes and you see all the dash lights go on and test.

Mines at 310 hours/14790 miles or 47.7mph avg.

Thanks for clarifying. I also had to be a little patient.

2081 miles / 61hrs = 34.1mph avg

I did have to idle a little yesterday at the boat ramp; I had a bunk come loose & forgot to care about the truck idling, while I jerry rigged the bunk, to get the boat home!

Foxborought the codes you saw are diagnostic codes. When you hold the trip button and turn on the ignition the gauges will sweep and the system will going into a test mode. The display will give you diag codes if there are any. Otherwise will say 00 00. The manual explans it better

The text “C Code” is displayed in the odometer
VFD for about three seconds. If there is no stored
fault information, the display will show two pairs of
zeroes in the format “00” “00”, which indicate that
the display of fault information is done. If there is
stored fault information, two sets of two-digit alpha
and alpha-numeric fault codes will appear in the
odometer display for a three second interval. The
first pair of digits represents a Diagnostic Trouble
Code (DTC), or fault code for the instrument cluster.
The second pair of digits is a counter for the number
of ignition key cycles that have occurred since the
displayed DTC was set. The instrument cluster will
continue to display additional sets of two pairs of digits
at three second intervals until all of the stored
codes have been displayed, which is again signaled
by a code of “00” “00”

 

I just tried this on my 05 and it did reset the trip odometer. Took a couple tries before it displayed the hours. 962 hours at 35000 miles. A little over 36 mph. Guess that proves it's a mostly highway truck, right?
