How much oil does the diff hold?
 

Getting ready to change the oil in the rear diff. before towing this summer. How many quarts or pints do they take? 06 Mega 4X4 Thanks in advance.

11.5 Rear Axle MOPAR® Synthetic Gear Lubricant SAE 75W-90 part number (5102232AA) 8.8 Pints 4.2 Liters

Filling an axle to the bottom of the fill hole may result in an over fill condition. This can cause fluid foaming which will result in inadequate lubrication to the axle components. To check axle fluid, park vehicle on a level surface. Take a piece of wire and make a 90 degree bend two inches from the end of the wire. Insert the wire into the fill plug hole and use it like a dipstick. Remove the wire and measure from the 90 degree bend to the oil level. Refer to specification for the correct measurement. Cover is marked with fill level or measure 1/4 inch below fill plug.

Think I put in about 4.5 quarts, just make sure its about 1 inch under the fill hole.

You over filled your diff if you put 4.5 qts, better go drain some out. 3.5 quarts is about right.

I'm old school... I put in 5 qts so the wheel brgs will get some of it. My UOAs are excellent and only a trace of wear metal on the magnet after 25k miles. Craig

Mine was overfilled from the factory/dealership,has 50000 miles of fairly heavy pulling,this was the first oil change and the oil looked great with no burn,t smell,i filled it back up to the fill hole.

4 in the rear and 2 in the front on mine and they don't over flow. Done every 30k. I recently went 74W140 synthetic in the read pulling the RV. 156K on the clock and gears look great.

BigIron, its was about, I just kept adding till it was just below the fill hole, you know the old finger guage.

If you have many miles on it and over fill it, you may start leaking at the pinion......
No matter what you fill it with, get a tube of posi additive and put it in also.

Do you need a gasket or the old high temp form a gasket like in the old days on the cover? I'm going to change mine this weekend.

No new gaskets are needed for the front and rear differentials as recommended by Dodge. I wipe down the gasket and the mating surfaces prior to re-installation.

Thanks DR I'm going on a 6000 mile trip and want to get this done. The truck had 54K when I bought it and 64K now. I have now idea if it has ever been changed, bet it has not.

Two things I'd add...

Some of the rear ends have a "fill line" stamped about 3/4" below the bottom of the hole. I usually use an allen key as a dipstick.

Also, many of us have broken cover bolts tightening them to factory spec with a torque wrench. I'd back off from the 30 ft/lbs specified in the factory service manual.

I made a little cheat sheet for all my fluids, and filters and all that. I wrote down my rear tooks 4 quarts and front tooks 3 quarts. I remember having a little left over.

Over filling a diff is not like over filling a crank case. The gear are sitting in the oil so they will get lubed. Where as your motor oil has to be pumped to parts of the motor. That is when the foam can kill your motor, because the pump cant pick it up.
