How many change their own oil?

How many of you change your own oil?

I was looking under my truck yesterday, I was amazed on how easy it looks like it would be to change. I have been paying a dealer 69 dollars for this. I m not real mechanical but I ve changed them on mid 80's chevy and this actually looks easier. What size is the drain plug. Any tips?

well if it's the same as mine, which i'm sure it is, all you need to pull the plug is a 3/8" drive ratchet.......OOPs yeah 1/2" drive. not 3/8"
EDIT: or is it....I can't remember. sometimes i'm just on auto pilot.....

I change my own it is really simple i am no sure isomething changed in 06 but all you need is a 1/2 inch drive ratchet it fits right in the plug. Just remember only hand tight oil filter and put some oil on the rubber seal on top of the new oil filter so when you tighten the filter the seal will no wringle up or tear.

I change mine. Very easy to do. I do the filter from the top. Remove the turbo ducting (that way I can see there is no dirt getting through air filter into the turbo) plastic bag around the filter (not as much possibility of a mess as the bottom is). 1/2" ratchet for the pan plug. Qulity time, eh?

I do it because I can, and also because it takes a lot less time than going to the dealership, and also because I do not have much faith in the dealers after reading all the stuff on the forums.

Well I do not do mine yet, the dealer has done them all. The first year or so they charged 26.95 for oil and lub with 5th one free. Over the last year plus it has gone up to 36.95(coupon in the mail every two months) with 5th one free. So my oil changes have averaged around $30 for the last two and a half years. It takes only 25 minutes or so to be in and out, and if the weather is good and the truck is dirty the porter will run it through the car wash for free.

Too easy and inexpensive for an old and lazy person like me to pass up.

I do.
For the post above, if you can get your oil changes for $30, go for it. Costs $30 + just for the oil and filter.

I would check the oil and filter to be sure the DEALER really is doing it.

I do mine myself. I do not trust people to work on my truck for something like that. Cheeper, too. (for me) I could have sworn I use a 3/8 ratchet.

Before you put the new filter on, fill it with oil so that the turbo does not have a dry start. After it fills to the top, wait a second, the oil goes back down. I usually put almost a quart in my filter.

I change mine. Went to Geno's Garage and bought their Fleetguard 4-2-1 maintenance kit, fumoto valve and oil filter removal "cup". Sure beats the st/dealer.

I bought a filter wrench that fits the bottom of the filter from NAPA. I long extension and a wratchet (sp) it comes off easy from the bottom. Delo @ NAPA $26. Filter from Cummins Mid South $9. Total job takes about 30 mins.

I always prefill the filter as stated above.

I do it, but the part I hate the most is when the plug is about 1/3 of the way out and hot oil starts dripping, then running, over your hand as you continue to unscrew the plug! Rubber gloves help.

I change mine, the only problem was my old 6.5 chevy diesel only held about 9 litres of oil, well when my oil bucket that hold 10 litres filled up it was a bit of a panic to get another container under the truck hahahahaa have a new 15 litre container now and works like a charm, way easier to change on this truck.
