How to determine which injector is bad?
 

Well, I just got my 07 - 5.9 back with the 5th and 6th injectors both bad. The symptoms were white smoke on startup after sitting for a few hours/overnight. The report came back as the 5th running at 84% and the 6th at 88% duty cycle, all others were at 100%. What exactly does that mean? If they are leaking down, then would they not be putting more fuel into each cyl? How does the computer know this?

Lastly, is there a scan tool that exists that can report that data to us other than taking it into the dealer?

My 07 5.9 had the #5 go out on it few months ago. Same symptoms, white smoke on cold start up, and I had a couple instances of rough idle. They hook it up to a star scan tool that measures the efficiency of each injector. My #5 was at 80%.

A quick check at hojme can be done with a heat gun. Check the temps at the exhaust ports. They should be fairly equal. If not, the ones that are different are screwing up.

[verymad]So there is no other scan tool available that can read the cyl duty cycle except Scan Star? I guess some of the developers out there need to start cracking the whip no? I understand that there are techical challenges to overcome, but there may be a lot of $$$ to be made if the nut is cracked. If Marco can re-program the computer and companies can make add-ons for the system, then can they not read a data stream about what is going on especially if they are stored codes that are static?

Not aware of ANY tool as versitile as the StarScan. Have you heard of patent infringment? There might not be as many buyers as you think. If I recall for about 20 grand and 8 grand a year minimum for maintaince you can have a Star Scan. That is approx cost of dealer overhead for unit. Still intrested???

If an injector is leaking down and your blowing white smoke on start up. Take your exhaust manifold off and watch the exhaust ports on start up. that'll tell which cylinder it is.

Might be easier to take it to the dealer though.

As far as scan tools I have been told http://www.autoenginuity.com/ does everything the OEM tool does. I have even been told you can reflash with it if you have the reflash file. I think you can even do immobilizer stuff with it. I will buy one but am waiting for the European package to come out so I can use it at work on everything...others on this site have it and say it works great.
