How to Check Lift Pump

I think my lift pump is going. How do I check it? I don't have a pressure gage. How much is one? Also, my 2004.5 truck has 95,000 miles. Would this be covered under warrenty?

Vulcan Performance sells a fuel pressure test gauge that connects to the schrader valve that is on the IP inlet banjo fitting. They're like $20 or $25. As for the warrenty, I really don't know. But I'll tell you this, if they do honor your LP under warrenty, they WILL replace it with an in-take pump. That is an ok pump, well, ok if you leave the motor stock. If you you're planning on doing more......get a Raptor, or Airdog or FASS.

they will not replace your lift pump under warranty UNLESS IT FAILS!!!! I fought with my *********** on this issue with my 04.5 until they got sick of me and had Daimler Chrysler call me. Still would not replace it. This is after I put gauges on and found my lift pump was only putting out 6psi at idle and 2psi or less at WOT. I called Cummins and they said the Injection Pump requires at least 10 psi coming from the lift pump through the filter. I ended up installing a Walbro 392 lift pump from GDP. Real good kit, puts out 18psi consistantly, never drops below 15 at WOT.

If youve got a buddy w/ a failed stock LP, put that on and take it to the dealer.

Just unplug the darn thing with engine running and then plug it back up.Sets a failure code.Makes dealer happy to see a failure code. I have read many times the 3rd gen lift pump is NOT checked by pressure. Its by volume.Check the repair manual for proper procedure. But if it fills the fuel filter canister up in short order its in specs.more or less.

I thought my lift pump was going out due to a 'hard to start' when the engine was heat soaked. I replaced the stock lift pump mounted on the fuel filter housing. No change? Took it to the dealer to do a scan. To make a long story short, it will cost you a $100.00 deductable to fix the issue at the dealer...if you have the same issue. The truck needs to be under the 100,00 mile / 5 year factory warranty. The dealership replaced all 6 injectors and installed an in-tank lift pump. Not one issue after the replacement, 7 micron fuel filters used since. Hope this helps with your current issue. Not sure what to do if you have traceable mods? Most manufacters will only warranty a product that has stayed within the engineered and manufactered specifications.

Now the $100 deduct is ONLY in years 6 and 7 of the in service date.Under years 6 and 7 its 0 deduct.Baldwin makes a 5 micron fuel filter but I don't think that's the injector issues. The NEW part number injectors have hardened ball and seat.

I am having a hard start issue on my 03. Others on this sight have said that they thin I have leaky injectors. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. I'm hoping that it will get a little worse so they have an easier time diagnosing the problem. Any way it seems these trucks have a lot of injector problems. Why is the so?

Well just maybe why there was a change in the late model replacement injectors to hardened ball and seat. Design change to this NEW feature would be a good indicator of previous issues.Ford 6.4s are having issues with their new design.Don't know about Duramax

How does the dealer check if your injectors are working properly? What are the symptoms of failing injectors?

Seems most failing injector posts are lots of white smoke or hard start cold.
