How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
I have a late model 2003 SO with a 48RE. From what I can tell all of the 2004's with 48RE's have 11.5's.... even SO's... but in 2003 the SO's had 10.5 rear ends.... Is there a way I can tell which one I have? There should be a stamp but I can't find one.
If I open the thing up and literally measure the diameter of the ring gear, will that be accurate?

My understanding is all 48re trucks have the 11.5 axle. For confirmation look at the 11.5's pumpkin from the rear, you will see how it squares off near the bottom of the diff cover, the 10.5's don't square off like that.
Re:How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
Says 10.5 on the glove box. Says "Auto 4spd" too, but doesn't specify 48RE or 47RE but the dealer invoice says 48RE...
Measured just the cover and no way an 11.5" ring gear could fit between the curves.
OH WELL!

njoverkill easiest way is call a dealership and give them the vin portion they want , they may have to call you back but can tell yah diff size and gear ratio
Good luck

njoverkill,
I'm pretty sure you have a 10.5" rear. The reason I say this because I had heard that in '03, if you got the SO Cummins, you got the 10.5 rear. BTW, does your window sticker say 11.5" axle? I know mine did.

On the glove box tag their is a trans ID code to the left of the the "auto 4spd". The 48re's code is DG8 but I forgot the 47re's code.

I have a 2003 SO 5 speed and have the 11.5in rear end. Look on your window sticker, or have a dealer do a VIN lookup and get the complete configuration for your truck.

Per Dodge's web site the 2500's have the 10.5 rear and the 3500's have the 11.5 rear, this is part of the suspension that allows the 3500's to carry more weight.

[/quote]You'll have to look at the fine print, many 2500's were/are delivered with the 11.5" AA axle out back (mine included). The HO's got the 11.5, and maybe even the SO's with the 5-shooter.

Re:How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
Whats the GAWR on the 11.5"? My 10.5" is 6000#.
To answer my own question but ask more questions...
I went to the AAM web site:
I'm going to assume our rear ends are CAST IRON not aluminum.
AAM 1050
GAWR 4545 kg
AAM 1150
GAWR 4950 kg
I'm a little confused here.
4545 kg is 9999 pounds and 4950 kg is 10890 pounds.
When the tag on my door says GAWR 6000 pounds, does that take into consideration the weight of the truck? Otherwise, where does this discrepancy come from?
More random info:
The ALUMINUM 10.5" is rated to 2700 KG which is 5950#. That rear end definitely does not look or feel like aluminum and if so, I don';t think that Dodge would OVERRATE the axle from 5950# to 6000#.
Still confused!

Re:How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
According to the stickie on the door jam, my 11.5 is also rated for 6000#.
I think the GAWR on the door jam has less to do with AA's ratings, but more on marketability and liability of selling a "3/4 ton" truck.
BTW, my front 9.25 is rated for 5200 on the door jam.
Both are iron.

Re:How can I tell if I have a 11.5" rear end?
Interesting. I guess I was trying to figure out what may be the "weak" point in my drivetrain if I ever plan on towing heavy. I know it's not my 48RE because everything up to a HO dually 3500 uses it, and according to AAM's site now I suppose I don't have a thing to worry about the 10.5". Seems like the 11.5" is almost overkill! (har har pun!)
