That's one way to check it but even quicker and more assured way is this:
Open the hood, look at the left (drivers) side of the valve cover (black plastic thing that says Cummins 24 valve and such)

There is a sticker that lists HP and/or the Torque rating. if this sticker says
305 HP or 555 TQ then it's the HO

When I was researching my truck before I bought it, a 2 dealers told me that DC stopped the "SO" version completely with the '04 year. All the engines starting in '04 were of the "HO" variety. If the salesmen could be believed...

You could not buy a new '04 HO in Calif. All SOs, 235 HP. And with cats I think. I had to go to Nevada to get my HO.

That salesman was correct!!

A friend and I were looking and new 07 Ram Diesels a couple days ago. A salesman walked up with a potential customer and we moved away and listened to their conversation. The customer asked the difference in the new 07 and an 06 he was looking at. The salesman told him that one had a turbo and one didn't but he wasn't sure which!!!!! The salesman walked away and we asked to guy if he needed any info because we knew what was what with these trucks. He said Ya that guy is an idiot!!! Turns out he's on another board and he already knows a lot about these trucks. You would think these guys would be trained just a little bit........

Or Mass or the rest of the New England states. I believe NY & NJ, too.

Cali DMV didn't give you any hassle registering it in CA? I thought you needed 7,500 miles or something like that on it so you could register it a used vehicle. I thought the only way around this was if you were in the military and could register it in your home state.

I registered it in Nevada. Then later on I decided to register it in Cal. since I spent more time there, and worked there.
