High Idle worked today for the first time

Welp, the high idle came up today for the first time :) As I was about to put my idle stick in place, the truck started to idle real rough for a second (shutting down cylinders?), then went into high idle. I thought, cool, too bad I can't get it to do this abover 29 degrees! >:(

Re:High Idle worked today for the first time

Anyone wishing to test their high idle can come up to my cold weather lab and we'll ensure it works. No charge!! We'll put it in the garage first to ensure it starts normally and then leave it out overnight to see that the high idle works. Guaranteed or we'll do it again, and again, and again!! No need to worry about it getting so warm that we can't conduct several tests...but from what I saw on the news, you folks on the east coast may have your own lab for a few days!! [laugh]

Seriously, when my high idle kicks in, it never idles rough but is a gradual climb from about 600-700 rpm to 1100 rpm. Anybody else getting the "rough idle"?

I do agree with you, wish there was a way to install a switch for a "anytime I want" high idle...would be great!!

This has come up before but without satisfactory resolution.

Do these 3rd Generation trucks have the cold temperature 3 cylinder idle or just a high 6 cylinder?
When I fire it up tomorrow morning the ambient temp will be about 2 F. I'm curious is it warming up on 3 cylinders or 6?

Mines never stumbled into the high idle; just a nice ramp up @ 2 minutes. Mine hits on all 6 during this evolution.

Mine jumps from 750 to 1000 RPM and is warming up on all 6.

Same here, smooth, graduall(sp) climb from 700, to 1000 rpm`s

It was gradual this time when I drove it tonight. Oh well, seems to be working fine now. I wish it would do that all the time. High idle I mean.

The "stick" works first time, every time. ;D

Maybe Ron Popiel will snatch the idea.
Cummins High Idle Stick. "Just set it,...and forget it" [laugh]

This is true.

I can't imagine why anybody would pay $ 20 - $ 30 for a throttle stick?
My Dowel rod works fine.

Re:High Idle worked today for the first time

I wonder if you could just have a switch to bypass the TPS and go through a rheostat so you could set the idle with a dial?

trailblazenyj 12-07-2003 07:37 PM

Re:High Idle worked today for the first time

Mr. Berak, that was what I was just thinking. There has to be a thermistor somewhere reporting a temperature. If that is all it does it should be easy to wire something variable in. However, if the reading is used for other processes then it might not be a good idea to screw with it.

So who can tell us what turns the high idle on?

Re:High Idle worked today for the first time

According to the information I read it is calculated by a combination of ECT and IAT values but the APP must be at learned idle value. On mine it also monitors park brake input because as soon as I release the brake the idle slows back to base. I was under the impression this feature would not work above 28 degrees but mine seems to be pretty consistent at 32-34 degree range. I have also never detected mine to cancel cylinders during warm up,the idle does fluctuate a bit but it sounds like all 6 are there. But if all else fails as said before the Ronco Cummins Idle Stick is a winner everytime ;D
