HELP! where is the block heater cord stowed?

Hey guys. first time I decided to need to run the rig in such cold weather.

I've searched for the cord in single digit temps until I couldnt feel my fingers anymore and decided to give yas a try in where I should look first.

Thanks.

kingofdodge7131 12-20-2004 06:54 PM

Im 99% sure that the 3rd gens just have the heater installed but no cored. Something in the range from 25-30 US smakerroos from a dodge dealer. I havent bought one. Just what i hear

aceheater 12-20-2004 06:55 PM

passenger side front corner should be just long enough to hang out on the bumper .. I don't know what year DC started doing this but they made the block heater an option just another way to save money llike the rear inner fender wells ...

phox_mulder 12-20-2004 07:16 PM

If you do indeed have the cord, check in and around the passenger side headlight.

Pretty sure the 03's came with the cord, DC didn't make it an option till the '04's.

All Cummins in Dodges come with the block heater, just the latest 3rd gen's don't come with the cord unless you specifically order it.

If you did get one without the cord, stay away from Dodge, get it from Cummins, much much cheaper.

Or on the block kinda behind the oil filter (in that area somewhere), is where your heater is. If it has a cord follow it back. If not go get one from a cummins distributor. They are much cheaper there.

nitrousn 12-20-2004 07:59 PM

2 of my friends bought 03's and neither one had the cord.

dodgedude361 12-20-2004 08:15 PM

i have the chord, look by the radiator, bottom left side

handymantim 12-20-2004 08:17 PM

Open the hood before you start looking near the passenger headlight. The cord is tucked away when it arrives from the factory and having the hood open will help. When you find it and release it, it will just barely make it halfway to the front of the bumper.

Ramtough 12-20-2004 08:51 PM

paid $11 and change at my local cummins dealer. A nuisance to install. I had to take the intake tube off and grease the rubber with some die electric grease to get er in.. ran it down to the frame rail and up to the altenator bracket. had some extra cord so i ran it over to the pass. foglight hole. Too Bad there is no outlet on the outside of my apt. building.... [verymad]
wonder if i asked nice if they would put one in.

Hummin Cummins 12-20-2004 09:45 PM

Thanks guys

I know I saw it under there the one day.

Some jostled a neuro synapse and I think it is behind my passenger side headlight (IIRC).

Mine has the block heater and cord. I know that.

(or am I thinking of my former Chubby diesel???)

clifford 12-20-2004 10:15 PM

I had to look and it is there by the righthand head lite.

nickleinonen 12-21-2004 01:41 AM

all canadian models get the cord as standard equipment [it was not an avalable option for my 04 when i ordered it... and looks like it isn't an option on the 05's either]

FROSTY1 12-21-2004 06:06 AM

Go to the Tech Facts section of this site. Then click on the 24v 3rd generation category, and there's a whole description of the block heater there for you that should answer all your questions. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Blue600 12-21-2004 07:14 AM

Cord was $11.46 at the local Cummins shop.

Maybe it's just me, but I have to open my hood EVERY time I plug in or unplug. Opening the hood is the ONLY way to find it.

handymantim 12-21-2004 08:16 AM

Hoss,

Maybe they gave you a short cord or routed it differently through the engine compartment but if you look in my photo gallery, you will see a detailed pic of the block heater pigtail. Just below the plug, you can see a plastic clip holding the pigtail in the "stowed" position. Maybe 2003 models have a different retaining clip. I just pryed open that clip and released the pigtail so that it reaches out in front of the hood. It sits out in the open all the time until summer comes back when I'll re-stow it.

Hoss 12-21-2004 10:10 AM

That's interesting. Mine doesn't look like that. Mine is about 6" short from even reaching the bumper. Mine also doesn't have that little plastic clip. It just hangs down between the light and the radiator.

slimpicken 12-21-2004 12:00 PM

11 dollars and some change?!!! I was robbed, the cummins shop in Arlington made me buy the element and all 46 dollars and some change after all said and done[verymad]

johnjudge007 12-21-2004 04:46 PM

is there a link to buy the cord????

Hoss 12-21-2004 09:24 PM

I stand corrected. When I plugged my truck in tonight I took a closer look at it and sure enough there was a little clip holding it in place. I took it out and now it's hanging out over the bumper. That will make plugging and unplugging easier. I've been popping the hood every time I needed to plug or unplug.

Not a really big deal down there.

Try it with a foot or two of white slushy stuff on top of the hood. when you're trying to unplug.

And that pic is nothing compared to what we sometimes get.

Phox, do you have a heated driveway?

More likely that he uses salt.

I decided that I prefer it the way it was. I don't like having a cord dangling from my front bumper.

BEHRMAN 12-22-2004 10:18 AM

My cord is plenty long. If you look in my gallery at the pic FRONT LIGHTS, you will see it at the botton corner of my license plate bracket. I secured it there with a wire clamp so I can plug it in and unplug it with one hand.

That was after shoveling the driveway.

Wish I was one of the rich and famous and had a heated driveway.

If I was, I'd have a garage tall enough to park my truck in as well.

Thats why I re-routed mine to the tow hook and zip-tied it there
And when not in use, It tucks away behind the fascia nicely

Now it does not mess my paint up on my bumper... hehe

Casket Man 12-22-2004 10:25 PM

I went and permantly installed a nice covered plug into the front of my bumper next to the license plate so I would not have the cord dangleing around on my painted bumper.

You can buy the plug at a marine supply store such as West Marine, It's called a onboard charger inlet.
Mine is made by Marinco part # 150BB1

kingofdodge7131 12-23-2004 08:08 PM

Just picked up the cheepest ones to date, got 2 of them for the price of Natta. Had to trucks come in today that had block heater problems Replaced the heaters and then they worked so instad of throwin the cord away, we keep um. So i decided being we replaced 6 heaters today and the shop doesnt need that many Tis mine

TexasCTD 12-24-2004 01:27 AM

I did the same as Tomeygun and have mine zip-tied to the tow hook. Works nicely and tucks away nicely behind the bumper when not in use. I also put an old female plug end on it to protect it when not in use since mine didn't have a "cap" on it. Got it from Cummins for 11 dollars and change. Tech guy there helped put it on and it was kinda difficult. Glad I got it with this arctic blast recently.

Rain Man 12-25-2004 06:50 PM

Cord

The cord does not come standard anymore for sure. It is a $10.00 option when ordering the truck. Mine does not have one so I went to the DC parts counter and they quoted a price for just the cord at $ 46 and change but would give me a 10% off because I just got the truck there. I told them no thanks as I felt that their prices were way over board and I told the salesman that they should give me one for the $ 10.00 but no dice. If I had known when I was doing the deal I would have gotten one then for the cheap price. I told the salesman that this was a pretty cheesie thing for DC to do to their loyal customers.

Rain Man 12-28-2004 11:37 AM

$10.84

This is what the cord cost from Cummins. $ 10.32 plus taxes. Cummins P/N 251919. In stock and out the door. Screw DC and their inflated prices. Picked mine up today.

Hummin Cummins 12-28-2004 01:11 PM

Found it.

Just wanted to chime in an note I found the chord.

On the 03 you simply open the hood and it is on the grille side of the passenger radiator suppport, slightly in board of the passenger headlight.

Easy enough. Just a little off of "front and center".
