"Help Installing Serpintine Belt"

I need "Help Installing Serpintine Belt".
On the way home last night it started making a noise like slay bells singing, pulled over and looked, the front rib on the serpintine belt was all chewed up. Long story short, I got the belt off, picked one up at PEP BOYS, $44. But I can't figure how I got the belt off, not how it go's, I have a diagram of what pulleys it go's over. Can't get it over the fan. There is something between the fan and radiator. Comes off the bottom to the center of the fan. Wire or something, what is it and how do I get belt over it? I know it's something simple, or it wouldn't of come off. I can't see in there and can't get my big hands in there, help, please.

You could cut it off.

I got it off, but don't know how I did it. I walked the belt around the fan, but there is something that plugs into center of the fan and gos down into bottom of the shroud. How do I get the belt between this plug and fan? I end up with the belt raped around it.

I went through this same thing when replacing my belt and got to the point you were at. I finally gave up and cut mine off. Installing the new one was no easy task either. Even with a diagram it took me a couple hours to get the new one on right. I think when this new belt needs to be changed I will just buy a new truck.[laugh]

INSTALLATION
5.9L DIESEL
The 5.9L diesel engine accessory drive system (with
a/c) consists of :
Generator Pulley (1)
Water Pump Pulley (2)
Idler Pulley (3)
Power Steering Pump Pulley (4)
Radiator Fan Pulley (5)
Crankshaft Pulley (6)
Automatic Tensioner (7)

must be used.
1. Position drive belt over all pulleys except water
pump pulley.
2. Attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to tensioner.

OK, I found this, did a search, now that I'm looking at it, number 5 is the fan and it doesn't need to go around it, the back of belt lays on top of it. I walked that belt around the fan 3 times last night and had it raped around that wires for the fan clutch. Had to undo it and start all over, got so mad I almost cut it. My hands are all cut up from the fan. Wish I had this information last night.

I know how frustrated you were!
I had my belt break so I didn't even have a reference... I had the auto parts store deliver the belt to me and after 2 hours I finally got it... But man!!! They should have a belt diagram sticker under the hood like other Mfg's do! I ended up taking a piece of cardboard and drawing out the positions of the pulleys and marking which ones were smooth and which were groved... then I was able to figure it out >> but that almost took more patience than I had!!
I stuck that drawing in my owners manual where it should have already been!

[dummy]I did the same thing...But I actually took it off myself,I just didn't pay attention.Almost an hour of trying to get that belt on (over the fan) I walked away, had a coffee and came back to it.Then it went on the first try (not over the fan)-almost like the little belt elves were helping. Then with a big grin I was looking around to see if anyone saw how 'slick' I had just installed that incredibly complex belt.[duhhh]

I read this thread, https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...lt+replacement before I started my Jacobs Brake install. It sure helped. No the belt does not go around the fan. After getting the belt around everything but the alternator I levered the tension pulley from underneath the truch with a cheater. I then used a tie down from the cheater to stout suspension piece to hold the cheater and get the slack to go over the alternator.

Still had the nicks and cuts on the hands though!

this diagram doesn't match up to my truck where could I find one for my 04.5?

Dodgezilla 01-25-2008 02:36 PM

Al! You better stop raping those parts on your engine!!!!!!

XLR8R 01-25-2008 02:45 PM

[nonono] That is just disgusting how some guys rape their parts! [yuk]

usmc2311 01-25-2008 03:10 PM

My 04.5 had a diagram under the hood. Of course, I didn't need to change the belt until after I had it repaired when a young Marine totaled his Toyota on my left front tire. When they did the repaint, they must have removed the sticker. So I don't have that reference anymore. And it helps immensely to have someone there to help. But luckily, I didn't end up with my belt wrapped around the fan.
