Has anyone messed w/ the APPS calibration?
Has anyone messed w/ the APPS calibration?
My trans has always shifted through the gears too quickly. Even with the new DTT trans it's the same old thing. Very light throttle or heavy throttle shifts are fine. Part throttle goes through the gears really quickly. OD happens immediately after the third gear shift. I have been using the OD button to keep this from happening but I'm getting tired of that. So, yesterday I decided to pull the APPS off and look at it. Of course there's a sticker that says "Do not adjust calibration! Replace unit!" But looking at it I could see that it was adjustable by loosening two Star head screws and spinning it one way or another. I went one way first but the shifts were even quicker. Pulled it off again and went the other way and the shifts got much better. I was all happy until I had driven about a mile and got the Dead pedal. I hobbled it home and didn't know if I should just leave it there and reset the APPS or put it back where it was and buy a new one. It was getting late so I put it back where it was. I did go through the reset procedure and it was fine all day today except for the quick shifts.
I now see that they run around $400.00 so I'm thinking about adjusting it again and then resetting it. It also gave me a code P2509.
So, I'm wondering if anybody else has tried to reset the position of this thing and if you were successful. I don't want to get stranded anywhere.......

No idea where or what you are adjusting, but you sparked my curiosity.
Sorry I'm not posting help, but my problem is it shifts too late. It doesn't hit OD until I hit 60mph...
I'll gladly test mine out and report my results back to you. Like a little back scratching...

interesting. ive been havin some funny shifting lately and my BDDL didnt seem like it was workin. i read somewhere about reseting the APPS by....turning the ignition on ( dont start the truck), floor the go pedal, then SLOWLY SLOWLY let it back up and turn the ignition off. start it up and see how it goes. i know for me it really seemed to fix the problem i had with my BDDL not feeling like it was doin a thing and the shifts feel better. i dunno. just my .02
apps does not controll the 1-3 shift it only controls the overdrive shift and the FUELLING of the engine, i know ive been there but i have the tools to set it right again {work for dodge}, 1-3 shifts are controlled by governor pressure and throttle pressure {1 of the cables thats hooked to the apps the other one is for the cruise controll, tighter the cable=later the shifts and vice-versa.
Well, I have my cable pulled as far back as possible to get my shifts right and it still doesn't make it right. When my truck was new, it shifted perfect! I even had to let off the throttle to get it to shift into OD. It was nice. Somewhere along the way it started shifting quicker and nobody has been able to help me. Even Bill Kondolay at DTT had no idea how to help me. He sent me a modified governor but even that didn't help. I had Timinva build my full DTT trans and it shifted really nice when I picked it up. A week later it was back to shifting like before. It's got to be something in the computer or some sensor causing this! Doesn't the APPS send a signal to the PCM telling it when to make the trans shift according to how much throttle you are giving it? Messing with the recal made it shift better so I have a feeling mine has a glitch causing the quick shifting. I'll let you guys know. I am so tired of this issue and nobody knows how to help. The Dodge techs tell me it shifts just fine and that really irritates me.... I go from second to third immediately and I'm always in OD by 35 mph... This is the only thing I've ever disliked about my truck. I almost traded it in twice for this reason. Now that I spent all the money on the trans I have to keep it...
I have done mine but it's a 6spd. Right after I did the calibration the engine was a mother to start. Took several 5 second cranks before the engine lit.
The APPS get calibrated by turning the ignition switch to the on position and pressing the accelerator down to the floor and release. Turn the ignition off and then start the truck. No mechanical adjustments involved.

You probably put it out of range maybe too high or too low voltage.
Just set it back (if you can tell where it was?) Is there a sticker on the APPS stating a voltage? On 2nd gens the APPS has a voltage - that is what it's supposed to be at idle. One of those 6 wires you can tap into to get the voltage and set it properly...

can sombody explain?
Thanks.
The first post talked about resetting the APPS which does not include any physical adjustment by hand. I also said that I had taken the thing apart and messed with the factory preset calibration....
lightening ram....what causes the real quick 1-2 gear shift/shudder on light throttle on these trucks? i flushed it and replaced the filter to no avail. only under really light throttle tho. if i give it juice it just goes like normal. thanks
my trans after the shift kit and torque convertor shifted super fast and got under my skin on accasions, mine was caused by the tight torque convertor, they are so direct now mine was 91% that it was almost like having a standard, under hard throttle mine shifted awesome also and adjusting the apps sensor down a bit on full throttle helped my overdrive from hanging up also, this means turning the full throttle stop screw in which is lowering the full throttle voltage, this helped.
My problems started long before I even thought about getting a DTT trans. The valve body helped some but couldn't completely get rid of the problem. Before the DTT VB all the shifts were really fast. I mean 1,2,3,OD by 25mph. I pulled that TV cable as far back as possible but then when I mashed the throttle it would buck and act really crazy!! Sometime when I mashed the pedal the trans would just completely disengage and the engine would just rev but the truck would go nowhere until I let up on the pedal. That problem was cured with the DTT VB....
I went ahead and bought a new APPS just in case. I may experiment with the old one if the new one doesn't cure the problem. Then I'll just have a spare...

Got me a new APPS on Ebay for a lot less than the dealer wanted. New in box!!
I'm gonna throw it on this weekend and if it doesn't help I'm gonna pull it off and start messing with the old one since that seemed to make things better....

Put the new APPS on last weekend and it did not change anything. I pulled it off and reset the calibration on my factory one. Basically, I loosened the set screws, turned it counter clockwise, and tightened the bolts. Put it back on and reset the APPS following the directions in the FAQ section. My shifts are much better than ever and it doesn't shift into OD for another 5 mph minimum. I am very happy after messing with this issue for the past 3 years. It did not do this when it was new. Anyways, it's still not perfect but it's much better than it was. Anyone with a quick shifting issue or an issue where their's won't shift soon enough could try this adjustment. Of course if yours won't shift soon enough you would turn the sensor clockwise. You must reset the APPS or you will end up with a dead pedal too.......
Dodgezilla, Talk to Dusty at HTS. I have a ATS sledpuller valve body ....at 70% pedal and above it shifts from 1-2 at 2800, 2-3 at 2600 3 to 4 when ever I want...rpms change slightly with go pedal....ks
