Fuel filter tricks

I am going to do my Fuel filter tomorrow. I bought a socket set 1/2 with a 1 1/4 socket in it. I have seen posts about hooking up a hose to the drain. Any and all tips would appreciated. Thx Dave

Got my fuel filter at Cummins NE so I got the right one I hope

Well you already have the socket but i bought the socket from geno's and really like it. Also I have never drained the fuel filter. i just unscrew it and take it out, replace it with the new one. dont know if thats right, i may need to drain it next time

By not draining it you are allowing all the sediment & "dirty" fuel to go into your IP. I wouldn't worry about it this time, but don't do it again. Drain it (you can put the fuel back in your tank) and clean it out if it needs it.

I'm sure you'll be fine, but when working around filters remember, act like you are doing surgury or something. Be EXTREMELY clean!

MAKE SURE TOP OF FILTER HOUSING IS CLEAN
Put your hose on the drain hose by front differential, other end in jug(I use a clean windshield washer fluid jug.) Open valve and take your socket and open top of filter housing a little(this will let er drain a little faster). When drained, remove top of filter housing, sometimes it seems to just spin and spin but pull up on it and itll come off.Now look at filter ,if its black your trucks probably gonna need injectors cp3,lift pump ah just kiddin ,itll normally be black.Pull filter off, pull rubber gasket off top,put new gasket on top,put new filter on top. Some people fill filter housing with fuel about half way but I dont like to do this because your putting unfilterd fuel in your cp3.Just put top back on and tighten down but dont break it off, close drain valve, remove your hose and jug.Set fuel aside for now. Get in your truck and turn on and bump starter but dont start, listen for lift pump, when it shuts off ,bump it again, repeat this about 4 times to fill the filter housing.Start truck let idle till it runs smooth, may idle a little rough till air bleeds out. While truck is idleing, check for leak No leaks? Well your done.after your fuel sits a while see if any water has separated or any contaminates.
Hope this helps Rooster

I would also recommend that the new O-ring be lubed up with some diesel fuel before installation...

BIGDAVE if you have not, do a search. Someone put in a lot of time and effort to take pics and etc. It is an extrememley easy task. don't let anyone else do it. You can do it. But yes that drain is there for a reason and definitly drain it, and also as someone else said BE EXTREMELY CLEAN! If you have any Ether around spray top of canister off and wipe down good, or blow off area with air hose. You'll do fine and you will see how easy it is. Good Luck

Wow Big Dave how many miles on it??

With the problems encountered by so many of injectors sticking open I change my fuel filter every 5k miles with the oil+ filter!

Make sure to use the premium 7 micron filter made by Fleetguard!

Ooops. Guilty here too. Is it the same drain that you would use if you got the water in fuel light?

Yeah, Jerry you're right. It is an inch and an eighth. I only remember that 'cause I changed mine today, if it was yesterday I probably would have gone with the 1 and a quarter!

Never wipe the housing out... anything you put in the housing will transfer particles way larger than what is probably left in the housing after you have drained it... Also... after you have drained it I would just reinstall the filter and then bump the key to repressure the system... Filling the housing with the filter out it just as bad as not draining the housing at all.
Also... 12" extension with a wobble adapter for the 1-1/8" will make things SOOO much easier... no weird angles that could possibly crack the cap.
