Fuel filter/seperator housing

Can anyone tell me what position the yellow drain valve on the stock filter/seperator housing is supposed to be in under normal operating conditions? I know that I am supposed to check it regularly but I am not sure what position is closed and what position is open. I have not been able to get anything to come out of it. It is supposed to drain any water accumilation, right?

If it were open your truck wouldn't start. Make sure you're turning it a full 90 degrees.

If you turn the lever and nothing comes out then loosen the cap and it should flow then if not then its plugged up and it will need to be unplugged.

On my truck the yellow handle points to the left front wheel when the valve is shut and I think my truck is identical to yours. It's clear tubing so you could see if it was clogged. Wonder if a friendly Texas Dirt Dauber has homesteaded it? If so, be careful there may be a sleeping Black Widow spider installed also!
You might leave the key on so the lift pump will run and add a little pressure.

harwill,

when you speak of the left front wheel is that while you are looking at the truck from the front or sitting in the cab. On mine the lever points straight forward towards the grill and rotates towards the passenger wheel. either way nothing has ever come out of it. thanks.

If nothing will come out....open the lever, and turn the key on, maybe even bump the starter to get the lift pump to build pressure. There is a tsb on this issue. It should be fine after that.

Left and Right are always from the Driver's seat. But you got me thinking and I went out and looked at mine again. Yes, the yellow lever IS pointing ahead and moves to the Drivers side; I had it backwards! But the owner's manual shows it moving to either the left or right - they saw 'outward'. And there was a caution about not opening while the engine is running. I wonder what the TSB is ?

This TSB is actually for '03s , but I have found it works on them all!

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
When the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain valve is opened, nothing comes out.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the Symptom/Condition is present, perform Repair Procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. With the engine not running. Place a drain pan under the Fuel
Filter/Water Separator drain hose.
2. Open the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain valve to it’s fully open
position (90 degree rotation).
3. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position (do not start the engine), this will run
the fuel lift pump for 2 seconds. As the fuel lift pump runs, it will purge fluid out
of the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain hose into the drain pan.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
5. Cycle the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain valve several times from open to
closed. At this point the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain valve should continue
to function properly. If the Fuel Filter/Water Separator drain valve does not
drain properly, repeat steps 1 through 5 again.
NOTE: THE NORMAL FLUID FLOW FROM THE FUEL FILTER/WATER
SEPARATOR DRAIN HOSE IS A STREAM THAT IS BETWEEN 1.6 MM
AND 3.2 MM (1/16 AND 1/8 IN.) DIAMETER.

thanks guys, this is great info. I will try this in the morning. I appreciate the help. I was under the impression that mine was not working properly. the truck is under warranty so that is not the issue it is just that taking it to the dealer can be so aggravating. the service manager that i have to deal with lacks people skills to say the least and is not always friendly or even helpful.

Chances are, the above info is all they will do to it anyhow! Might as well try it yourself!

They could have shortened that TSB to:

"Turn key on and jiggle the handle, watch stream and don't get any on the floor"
