I was using a 1/2" OD 3/8" ID hose with a conector. If you get 1/2" ID it the filter canister hose should slip inside easy and just use a clamp, but what you have will work. Actually now that i remember, I think i slipped my hose inside the canister's hose and it had a pretty snug fit, with one clamp it didn't leak at all.

Thanks for the post! That's good information and it's presented very well!
Unfortunately I got to learn the hard way how to get to that fuel filter.... We ran my truck out of fuel trying to get it low enough to do the fuel tank vent mod. We tried priming it several times, but ended up having to fill the fuel filter canister up (don't know the correct terminology for that)... Started like a dream then!
I will also say that the fuel filter on my '06 is much easier to get to than my husband and father-in-law's '04 CTDs. We had to change one out the other day. Dr. Z made a huge improvement there!

On another forum a thread on changing the fuel filter said to use 3/4" ID tubing to go over the drain hose. I haven't tried it yet but the pictures shows that it works.

What's up with the new Fleetguard filters? They now look cheap and are borderline fimsy. You can see in HorseHaulers pics, the older filter with thick rounded ends versus the very thin, non-rounded ends of the new filter. I will order 6 at a time from Geno's to get me through a year, and just used one of the new style today, as it turns out the new style will not fit in Geno's billet fuel filter cap. I thought something was funny when I couldn't get the cap to thread on, after a closer inspection I realized the filter wouldn't fit up in the billet cap. I had to break out the utility knife to trim it up a tad. The part numbers are the same, i'm just curious as to why they changed the design...

I noticed the difference from the old and new too, thought that was kinda odd. Good to know it doesn't fit in the billet cap from genos. I had plans that if I ever broke my cap thats where I would get another...

Great post! I want to start doing this myself since the dealer charges so much. I do have a question though. Do you have to disconnect the batteries or remove the fuel injection fuse prior to replacing the filter?

So, is it just me or do those things take forever to drain?? Then once they are "done" draining, there is still about an inch of fuel in the bottom of the canister...

(I trust that others will correct me if I'm wrong)
It's not like the goal is to totally drain it.
You're just trying to lower the level in the canister a bit so you don't spash diesel everywhere when you switch out the old filter for the new.
