factory exhaust brake
Im lookin at an '06 mega cab dually and want the dealer to put the factory exhaust brake on it. What was the cost of this option? Thanks.

I believe retail of the Jacob kit is like $1200, plus installation. I would think you could negotiate a better deal with the vehicle.

I wouldn't pay any more than $1200 or so installed. Lots of members have purchased the kit for about $750 and installed it themselves. I bought my Pac Brake PRXB for $1040 and installed it in my driveway.

The dealer in the town where I work wanted $1325 before tax just for the Jacobs Exhaust Brake. I went with the PRXB instead as I like having the electric air compressor over the belt powered vacum pump. Plus the replacement belt for the exhaust brake from Geno's a couple years back was about $85.

The cheapest I have ever seen it for sale is 1100. I paid 1400 installed and feel I got a really good deal, my dad paid 1600 installed...

total investment in mine is 1k. i bought the brake for around 700 new in box and had the dealer install it for 300. if i hadnt gotten such a smoken deal, i would much rather run the pacbrake

I think mine was around $1300 installed. Haven't been very pleased with the stalk switch, as it rattles so bad I've reverted to tape and cable ties to try to get it to stop.
Overall mine has worked good, but guys have had the vaccuum pump fail, and in some cases, significant damage from that failure. Also, the cost of the vaccuum pump at the dealer is ridiculous, but a Cummins dealer will sell it to you much cheaper. If I had it to do again, I would have installed a PAC brake, but I was worried about the factory warranty. Just my .02 |
I chose the PacBrake over the stock brake, too many compressor failures AND too much damage can result, I did not see where the factory brake had advantages if these issues could not be resolved and possibly have me dealing with it alongside the road somewhere.
As far as something aftermarket causing a warranty issue, Dodge opened up the aftermarket brake choices when they themselves installed one, goes to a brake NOT causing problems. On the trucks that do not have the brake as standard equipment, most dealers will install any brake you choose, to include the PacBrake if that's the one you want installed. Let's face it, if you use the wrong cleaner on your dash they could be in your face regarding your warranty, says so on their sign marketing cleaners in my Dodge parts department - 'the only approved cleaner' is theirs - go figure. I weighed in ALL the brake comparisons, I fell by getting the PacBrake I got my money's worth and then some. It was an easy install, did it in the driveway in a few hours time. The factory brake works just fine, does it's job, if you have warranty concerns, then that is your better route of choice. When you are out of warranty and have some miles on it don't forget to give us all some feedback then, long-term reliability truly addresses what choices will be the better. CD |

I also am on my second stalk switch. I found the noise is coming from somewhere on the top of the switch, kinda close to where the red light is. I heard through the rumor mill that they are now producing a switch for the dash available for the 06 and earlier (just like the current 07 and later jake brake switch). Can't believe you pay this kinda money for this garbage, but then again, after pulling a 10K lbs trailer with the jake, i don't want to do without it...

I got mine when I ordered my truck. It was aprox 1400 installed. Haven't had any problems at all with it. now at 42K mi. wouldn't be with out it when towing in the mountains.

Had a pak on my 99 worked great for about 50k then started sticking. My uncle also had the same problem, we both tried everything we could think of from cleaning to lubing. Had no luck replaced both, second lasted till about 110k. Traded truck in. Had the jacob's installed on my 05 no problems but traded it in a 63k. My dealer thru in the brake (of course that was after they sold the truck i put money down on) 3.5 hours to dealer and it was gone. I can say I'll never have another diesel without a brake. It did take the dealer forever to install the brake, of course that was a few years ago and they said it was their first one. Don't know if I would tackle that on my own. Had the problem with the switch but a rubber band took care of it. New truck came factory installed. Works great and love the 6 speed auto (just with they would get the bugs worked out on the new dpf.

Ya'll r killing me. I've got the Jacobs E-Brake kit SITTING in a spare bedroom. Everytime I think I'll go ahead and install it, I read about failures and damage from failures. Then I start deciding to return it and order the PAC, then I hear of failures on them.... ARGH!!!.. So, it sits...still in the box, and me with no decision.

You'll be fine with it, or with the pac... think about how few people rant about how good something is, all you read about is failures... but for each failure there are many many more who are perfectly happy and stay quiet.
