engine hesitation at 2000 rpm! Cummins 600->
New Cummins 600, I have the new 600 and have only noticed the hesitation when it was around 30*. I had the reflash done today so I will probably not notice a difference until the temp drops here (Texas, might be awhile). I have the rattle you are talking about but I consider it a ping or fuel knock. I had hoped the reflash would clear this up but it did not. My fuel mileage is bad also (4x4 DRW auto). I feel like something could be tweaked to help this "rattling" and it would probably help with fuel economy also but it would probably hurt the emissions which is the one of the things the 04.5 "600" is noted for.

That concise answer to my tranny cooler question was so perfect (and helpful). I really appreciate BigBlock's input on the site. He can eliminate a lot of speculation and mis-information which really focuses quality discussion. Thanks again BigBlock!

I do wish they would have tested this a bit more. One thing that I am noticing between all of the big three is they are not spending enough time testing. Granted, you take your chances on any new engine...but some of what we are seeing is just not enough R&D. I am glad to say, that the problems we are talking about here so far seem pretty minimal compared to others. Although no problems would have been a little more in line with the Cummins reputation.
Welcome to the site, New Cummins 600.
I hope you are really enjoying your new truck.
Like dwhite said, the hesitation seems to occur whe ambient temp is around 30 degrees. Perhaps someone else with this problem can better elaborate for you than I can. Heck, I'm still waiting for my 600.
Afacey, a member here and the TDR, had the problem on his new 600. After the flash, I believe everything is ok now. Also, check out the TDR - www.turbodieselregister.com for some more information and more great reading. You have to be a paid member to post there, though.
I believe that the mild rattle/pinging noise that you're hearing is normal. The 600 has up to 3 injection events per cycle (pre, main, and post) and I believe the post injection event is what is making the noise. It was added to pass emissions without needing EGR. However strange or unpleasant it might be, I've never driven a 600 so I've never heard it, it's still better than EGR.
As far as mileage, most people are reporting about the same as you. It should increase some with more miles but the jury is out if it will be as good as the previous Cummins. Bigblock2stroke, also a member here with great connections in the business, it seems, says that the 600 won't get as good of mileage as the 555.

Turbo98,
First, welcome to the site. Secondly, in computer forum speak, typing in CAPS is yelling. Perhaps you're still excited about your new Cummins. I understand.
Truck build and delivery info can be found at this website:
http://insightnl.extra.daimlerchrysl...aler_LOGIN.jsp
You need a Dealer Code, though.
The other option is to call DC Customer Service with your VON or VIN. Their number is 800-992-1997.

Thank you for the welcome jlasich. And thank you for the follow up info on the ping bigblock2stroke. Just in the day that I have been reading here I have learned a lot.
Well, as I had mentioned previously, it snowed here last night. The ambient temp was a little below what was mentioned (30 F) and I decided to see what results I might find now that I had a little better idea of what to look for. I was unable to duplicate any of the problems described here and even the mild things I mentioned in my previous post were not present. Due to slick roads, I did not really get a chance to test it out this morning to the degree I had hoped. I got up to 60 mph, which was plenty fast with the snow and road construction going on in my area, and noticed nothing.
But on my way home from work, all the snow was gone. Temp now being 44 F, I gave the truck various tests and I could not notice a single problem. Going from less than 1000 RPM, I mashed down on the gas, and had no hesitation at all. No missed anything. No vibration. No nothing. Just the whine of the turbo kicking in and the enjoyment of the sound of the Cummins firing up with that deep hum...a direct result of opening the throttle all the way. On the highway, I had dropped down below 2000 RPM (not by much...but a hair) and then mashed on the gas wide open. She didn't even flinch. No smoke. No nothing but driving bliss.
It does not appear I will get snow tonight, so I will try her again tomorrow morning. Should be right around 30 F when I go to work. But at this stage, I am wondering if the problems people have pointed out are somewhat limited in the number of vehicles effected. A bit early to say that in relation to my own vehicle, but I can't say I found any troubles today.
I have babied the engine up until today. I passed the 600 mile marker today, and was told by my dealer to go somewhat easy for the first 600 miles, yet keep the RPMs fluctuating. But in those fluctuations, I had not broke more than a hair above 2000. Today was the first time I hit 3000. It drove great.
In regards to the ping or clatter, coming from a 7.3 L PSD, I can tell you that this sound is nothing. For some it might be something, but I am used to a heck of a lot more. And really, I don't care. It's a diesel. I expect some noise. Not as loud as say the 02 Cummins. That was pretty loud. Sounded good though.

(I have 2000 miles on my 600 now, pulled the boat around town today for somthing to do. Problems I have so far.... Wiper delay is screwed up, missing under cab plugs just have tape, transmission is dripping very small amount of fluid around the bottom of the bellhousing, slight rear end wine, some kind of rattle that I can't figure out coming from underneath. )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mine was an early one built on 1-7-04, delivered to me on 2-2-04.
I put the 500 breakin' miles on it and headed to Florida w/ 14K 5th wheel. 8-9 mpg w/ trailer! Hasn't used a drop of oil, but has fluid hanging from torgue converter cover. Has the hesitation at 2K rpm, missing cab plugs, oil smell in cab at stops, and nasty pinging sound any time I am lightly on the go pedal. Also rear diff whine at slow speed when cold. Has 3400 miles at this time.
No high speed problems. Read of 70 mph hiccups, so I "played" on the hyway. Maxed out at 107 mph, smooth as silk.
In looking under the hood for source of pinging, noticed that injector feed tube for #1 has nasty "pulse" to the touch that other 5 do not have. To the point that I thought it was loose! Any thoughts?
Question? If the pinging is a lean/emmisions issue, would one of the available "boxes" juice up the fuel enough to fix the condition?
I have been calling the selling dealer (Jeff D'ambrosio in Downingtown, PA) since finding out about the reflash, and have not been able to contact them to make an appointment. No one answers the phone, I leave a message, I get no call back.
Don't know whether to call another dealer, or DC.
Thanks for listening, and I welcome all advice. This is my first Ram/CTD. Compared to my old fords, I love this thing and will never go back!

Update...
The dealer told me they called star about the knocking/pinging, they said it was caused by the extra injection cycle. My transmission stoped leaking, dealer probility put saw-dust in the tranny to stop this, dealer said the tranny could have been over filled and it spit some out of the breather? Wipers fixed, new control box. Instead of ordering the cab plugs I removed the tape and put on alum. duct tape. The rear end wine they said it was normal, because its a heavy duty truck. I'm getting the box line-x ed next week, maybe i will not hear it anymore. I live in Florida so I have not had any engine problems, never has been below 60 when I have run the truck. But the number one injector has some diesel by it, the dealer tightined it up and said leak fixed.

" The rear end wine they said it was normal, because its a heavy duty truck."
Don't let them feed you that crap that its normal, make them fix it its not normal !
If it was normal they wouldn't be fixing all these other wining rear-ends on here...
Tell them to start with a new rig and pinion, if that doesn't fix it put in a new rear-end.......JMO

I agree it should not be making noise but... It is such a hassel to take the truck into the dealer, and the thought of them working on my axle, plus the downtime. I'm gonna do some heavy pulling, might have an 9000 boat to tow to the keys and back in a few weeks. Then i'll do a fluid change and see if that helps. If not i'll push the issue. Last week I put a magnet on the cover, the noise seems like it went down some so time will tell.
Also about the fuel smell in the cab, I think it was coming from draining my fuel filter, fuel pooled on the rack and pinion, then sprayed on the engine. I extended the drain tube and I don't get the smell anymore.

people thought I was crazy
Well one month ago I drove the new Dodge and posted in here, the date was 2-5-04, about how I was unimpressed with the way the truck ran compared to the 305/555 and a lot of people thought I was blowing smoke, one guy accused me of working for ford or chevy LOL. Well after reading all these posts I guess more people see what I was talking about now. I was posting mainly because I knew there were a lot of people that ordered these trucks and when it comes in you are somewhat stuck with it, not like going onto the lot and driving 5 of them then selecting the best running one.
Well I'm sure Cummins will work the problem out but in my opinion, when anybody comes out with something new I'd rather wait and let them work the kinks out.
I decided to keep my 12 valvue and boy am I glad I did too.

Pushin-No2, I have the same configuration as you...and the same problems as you. I had the reflash done but I can't tell a difference yet because it has not been very cold here. My dealer said the oil leak was some kind of stuff they use when assembling and it would "burn off with time"...I can't remember what he called it but it looks like oil to me. There is a fix out for the cab smell and if you go to dieselram.com and search for "blow by air vent odor fix" you should find a very good detailed fix with pictures. It is a P-I-T-A but it worked for me. What kind of MPG are you getting unloaded?
