engine hesitation at 2000 rpm! Cummins 600->
PapaPerk, thank you for sharing all the information. I ordered on December 3rd, truck built on January 9th and has been in quality control until last week. Today, February 17th, DC called to inform me the truck had returned to quality control. They would not say for what reason, but I think we know. I cancelled the order and the dealer will begin the process all over again. Do not like the wait again but I do not want a truck that has been in quality control for two months. My last five Dodge/Cummins trucks have been great. Hope the next one will be too. With all the testing that was done, I would have thought this "bug" would have surfaced before production.
Well said PapaPerk, and I'm sure the next one will be right.
LHaper, I agree. With all their testing (supposedly), how could they miss something so obvious. Sometimes I just don't understand.

Ok Bigblock2stroke. I've read several of your posts now and you've got to let everyone in on your secret. Do you work for DC or Cummins? All your posts seem to be pretty technical, or reasonable, from what I've read. So, time to come clean.
Sorry that this is off-topic but enquiring minds want to know.

Well it is good to know that DC/Cummins is listening in!
So if the reflash fixes the problem then I am assuming that the new trucks being built are not going to have the hesitation problem. At least I hope so! I am confident Cummins will get it straightened out. I am looking forward to receiving my new truck!

I picked up my 600 last week, and have had the same problem once in a while.
It seems to only do it when it is not completely warm, or too much throttle.
It feels like the wastegate is poping open and then closing. I am going to
just get some miles on it and see what happens.

Amen!!! My statement earlier in this thread about Cummins being on top of the situation was even more true than I knew. My truck is to roll down the line next week, wouldn't upset me a bit if the fix is already instituted at the factory.

Thank you Bigblock2stroke!

Thank you Bigblock2stroke!
Right, if you have not received your truck yet, it should come with the fix. Make sure your dealer has checked before you leave with your new truck.
Just happy to alleviate some of your fears. This engine is one bad mo' fo' and should prove to be as reliable as you would expect from Cummins.

Hi Everybody!
I just picked up my 04 2500 with the Cummins 600 what will be two weeks ago Saturday. This is my first Cummins and first Dodge. I had heard that there were problems with the 600, which led me here. Being new to Cummins, and having the new 600, I am curious about these issues and hoped some of you who are having problems could elaborate:
1. How noticable is this problem?
2. I have noticed a mild rattle that I can hear, but have assumed this is just usual for the Cummins. It's fairly quiet. I just hear it faintly. Is that the norm? (forgive me if that seems like a dumb question).
3. This pause that everybody is talking about...I have noticed a pause myself, but it is before 2000 RPM. I had just attributed it to the newness of the vehicle. I have a automatic. When getting on the freeway, I notice a little pause when excelerating...but I am only at about 40 mph when I notice it. The engine gets quite a bit louder (it's so quiet that anything is noticable) and it feels kind of like it's straining, then poof. It's gone. By the time I hit 60, I don't notice anything that I would consider out of the ordinary. I have been largely keeping the RPMs under 2000 so far just to try and get the best milage possilbe. Usually just a hair below. But when at 2000 or above, I haven't noticed a problem yet.
At 70 mph I have noticed nothing. Upwards of 70 I have noticed nothing. The only things that have stuck out in my mind, being new mind you, is the slight pause, the sound of the engine getting fairly loud, and the very mild rattle. I am betting these are nothing to worry about. But I thought I would share what little information I have with you all, as you have much more exposure to the CD then myself.
Also, everybody I know has always told me to expect 20+ mpg. I can't seem to get any better than 16.9 or so. Is that just because it is new? I only have 500 miles on the engine. Again, forgive me if I am asking questions with obvious answers. This is my first visit to this forum and I have a lot of reading to do. Thank you for any insight you may have.
BTW...it's cold here in North Idaho. Snow tonight. Perhaps tomorrow morning will be a good chance to put this to the test.

The problem I had was around 1800 to 2100 rpm. When I would "roll" into the throttle from mid to high throttle the hesitation would occur. This hesitation would produce noticeable bucking of the vehicle and blue smoke out the pipe. I had a 6 speed so I am not sure how the autos behave. Maybe some one else can chime in on that.
Also my truck at around 74 mph bucked and hesitated. You could feel it misfire. I think the two problems were related. Supposedly good ol' DC has a fix for this now. I ordered another truck so I hope it doesn't have the problem.
Here is something intresting or distrubing depending on your point of view. The techs and shop didn't know anything about the new 600 engine!!!! It is like DC just releases the thing and expects the mechanics to automatically now who to fix it! I feel sorry for the techs because they really want to fix a customer's problem but do not have the resources to do so.
Anyway I hope your truck does not have the infamous hesitation. It is no fun........
