Electrical Problem

2003 Dodge Ram 2500. Having issue with volt meter dropping to 0 and the check gauges light comes on, sometimes also the CEL. Showing codes P0480, P0341, P0622 & P2502. Using my volt meter the batteries read 12.4 volts running or shutoff. Seems like its not charging? Need to figure this out this weekend.

Thanks in advance.

A voltage of 12.4 with the motor running shows for sure that the batteries are not getting charged. Suggest that first you get the charging problem fixed before worrying about all those codes. Check the voltage at the alternator with the engine off to make sure that it is being fed battery voltage as it needs some voltage before it will charge. Follow the wire from the battery to the alternator and make sure that it is in good condition. Strongly suggest that you remove the alternator wire at the battery and make sure that it is clean with no hidden corrosion under it. Are you sure that ALL the battery terminals are clean?

Maybe remove the alternator (not a big job) and take it to an alternator shop and have them do a bench check.

Let us know what fixed the problem.

First thing I did was clean all the terminals. Still not charging. It has voltage at the alternator with engine off as well. Bad alternator is kinda what i'm leaning toward also. Will try and get it off tomorrow and have it tested.

I also think that you have bad alternator. The code P0622 is also a clue for this idea.

Well took the alternator in and it tested good. Reinstalled and it works now. It was very hard to remove from the bracket during removal. I grab a file and ground the mating surface of the bracket and alternator during reinstall. I'm assuming that that it was getting a bad ground for the alternator.

I will update if the problem returns.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that your problem is resolved.

BTW, does your truck have updated cast alternator bracket? This came out with a SB many years ago.

No, it is the stamped bracket.

Check it carefully. Mine was cracked in two places. Now have the cast version. Cheap Dodge sells them without paint!

I take it there is a risk of it breaking completely off?

Mexstan Jun 12, 2017 05:00 AM

Possibly, if the cracks were ignored long enough.

Check with Dodge as maybe that modified bracket and the installation is still free.
