Dry start question

Lately I have been pondering the idea of buying a pre-oiler for the Cummins. I drive my truck once a week and always bring it up to operating temp. My question is do any of you think 1 week is enough time to have dry start problems causing premature wear. I would hate to have invested in a truck to last me many years only to wear it out before it's time because I don't drive it enough. It's a 2003 with aprox. 40K miles. Has anyone ever installed a pre-oiler?

I wouldn't worry about it. I drive the 92' at least once a week and it has 170k without any problems. In the winter I would be worried about running a 15w-40 oil and not plugging the truck in causing premature wear, but other than that I'm wouldn't be worried. It takes a lot longer for the 15w-40 to fully pressurize the system when that particular oil is dead cold. In the summer it's not a big deal. If those are your concerns then one thing that will help is switching to a synthetic oil. In the winter, synthetics will flow like water on a hot summer day. That's the easiest way to decrease your wear and tear on the engine.

Can not hurt and can only help. I am using Amsoil Pre-Charger...works like a charm.

I remember talking to a guy who bought one, and something broke on it and it dumped all the enginen oil... If you do get one, make sure it is from a reputable company.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. IMHO the engine in stock form is likely to outlive the rest of the truck with just the prescribed service.

Thanks for your help guys. That answered my question. I probably won't invest in one or at least not for a while.
