Overboost is not really an issue for diesels.

In the gasser world, overboost is a problem due to detonation. Since diesels inject the fuel right at the desired point for combustion, detonation isn't an issue. (there are exceptions to this involving extremely advanced timing but that's outside the scope of what we're talking about).

Wastegates are used when you're trying to use a small turbo to come up on boost very quickly and make the truck feel snappy. They then run out of exhaust turbine flow at high rpm, so you just dump the excess exhaust with a gate.

A properly sized turbo really doesn't need a gate unless you're trying to make it do something unique.

Excellent point. All other things being equal, a well-matched combo in terms of fueling, along with appropriate inducer/exducer sizes will perform best all by itself, no WG required.

Modern trucks need wastegates because modern drivers don't know how to drive. It won't feel right to Joe burnout if it doesn't spool instantly.

The turbo on my 1st Gen has a wastegate and it is bolted shut (i.e. inop/permanently closed).

All our trucks come with a wastegate. Under stock or mildly modified conditions you really don't need it though. I have mine blocked off at the hose so it does not function at all.
Those trucks that are heavily modded need a wastegate because more fuel equals more boost and too much will pop a head gasket....

The aftermarket turbo I used to run had a wastegate...

There are 14sq cm turbines w/g'd and non w/g'd for the hx35s and the 16 sq cm turbines are non w/g'd. It depends on if the particular turbo/engine combo needs a w/g to keep drive psi from going to high. My a2k has a huge turbine and no w/g and still spools as fast or faster than the stocker. I don't know how they did it but I love mine. Craig
