My wife just picked up our truck from the dealer, it was in for an oil change (part of service agreement) at 15k. Here's a list of "recommended" items that needed to be done at this mileage interval.

1. Service rear diff. 125$ :(

2. Service front diff. 125$ :o

3. Change fuel filter 100$ [laugh]

4. Service fuel system 90$ [verymad]

Now I know that the Fuel filter was changed by myself at 12k So it should be good to go until winter is over. Does anyone else think this is ridiculous 350$ to change the gear oil?

I'm also assuming that this is for the B scheduled plan?

And what is a fuel system service? :eek:

That means I saved myself $73.00
I ordered my fuel filter from Geno's and a filter "socket" and made use of the FREE "CUMMINS TURBO DIESEL" wind screen decal offer.
All this and it was delivered to my front door, this was the first time I had done this replacement and it took me less than 15 minutes. All this for $27.00.
Go figure!

Gear oil changed at 15K ?????????????
Unless your truck has been swimming, I think thats a bit extreme (must be schedule C)

what about the fuel system is there to service??...besides the filter, which is a seperate item on their list

Service Dept is a great money maker for dealers.

You can buy 5 gallons of gear oil for about $125 and change both differentials about 3 times if you do it yourself. If you stick with the 15,000 mile service that puts you at 45,000 miles for the third change, then you need it again at about 60,000.

I suggest that you check around and learn how to do these simple services yourself. I have saved a lot of money doing that as I know that my local dealer is even higher priced than yours.

Doing these services is easy, you should be able to recycle the used oil somewhere locally and if you have a wood stove for heat you can run the filters through the fire and gain a little extra heat.

My dealer wanted 175$ per axle. So i changed them myself for 70$ i used 75-140 royal purple in the rear (i tow alot & its very hot here in AZ) & 75-90 in the front. The owners manual says change @ 15k.

I think the gear oil is already Synthetic from the factory.

The AAM axles "require" 15K mile lube change intervals; I think the first one is most important, since you can refill with the proper amount of quality (Red Line, Royal Purple, etc.) gear oil.
