Cummins 600, 610

I have a simple question? What ais the diffrence between the 600 and the 610? Doesn't seem like 10 ft-lbs of torque is a big deal? How did DC get another 10 out of the same engine? Just curious?

Actually Dodge/Cummins prided themselves in being the most powerful Diesel available in a 2500-3500 series truck with the Cummins 600. Then General Motors rolled out a new Duramax Diesel rated at 605 ib ft of torque. So thus Dodge/Cummins promptly rolled out a Cummins 610 reclaiming the king of the hill. Probably done through computer tuning.

Horsepower is a by product here and the one with the most Torque wins

I've heard it was done via computer as well. Think how easy it is for some of us to add an easy 100 lb/ft of torque with a box. They probably had to change a few parameters in the fueling or timing in the computer and bingo....610 easy as cake. Makes you wonder why one manufacturor doesn't just go ahead and make an honest 650 or 700torque number.

they actually didn't change anything. The engines were centered on 610 just to avoid "low power" complaints, so they just changed the name. If you have a 600, there is no recalibration available to make it a 610. It just is already.

these numbers are all "net" anyway. The only time you see 610 is if the AC is on, the fan is on full speed, the power steering pump is fully loaded, and the alternator is fully loaded. You will never get more than 560 ft-lbs to the transmission. Its called net torque management.

On the 555 engines, the 555 is available all the time (unless the trans is crying about it, ie, at launch, in reverse, etc) but when the fan comes on you go down to something less than 555, say 525. With the 610, you would stay at 560 even if the fan came on.

Is the 610 more reliable or better tested than the 600 ?

Is there any difference in fuel economy between the two ?

Are the torque curves the same, ie flat from 1600 RPM to 2900 RPM ?

How does the economy of a 6x0 compare to the 555 or the 24V with the VP44 ?

Is there an article that explains all the of the features and technology in the Gen3 engines ? (sorry, I'm new to Dodge and Cummins...)

Thanks.

SD, Probably not, Probably not, Yes and the 555 owners report a little better mileage than the 600/610 folk, IIRC.
