code p0314- cam sensor?

where is it and how hard is it to change? i have periodically had a long crank time, but figured it was fuel related. today i stalled my truck leaving my daughters school and it cranked forever. once it finally started the ole check eng light was on a p0341 code was thrown. i can only assume this is the long crank issue i have had for a long time, or could i be wrong?? it's been to the dealer for this before and they cant find anything wrong with it. would the crank sensor cause a long crank time?? thanks.

SENSOR-CAMSHAFT POSITION
DESCRIPTION
The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 5.9L diesel engine is located below the fuel injection pump. It is bolted to the back of the timing gear housing.

OPERATION
The diesel Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) contains
a hall effect device. A rotating target wheel (tonewheel)
for the CMP is located on the camshaft gear.

This hall effect device detects holes located on the
back side of the camshaft gear. As the camshaft gear
rotates, the holes pass the tip of the CMP.

When the leading edge of the hole passes the tip of
the CMP, the following occurs: The interruption of
magnetic field causes the voltage to switch high
resulting in a signal of approximately 5 volts.

When the trailing edge of the hole passes the tip of
the CMP, the following occurs: The change of the
magnetic field causes the signal voltage to switch low
to 0 volts.
The CMP (1) provides a signal to the Engine Control
Module (ECM) at all times when the engine is running.

The ECM uses the CMP information primarily on
engine start-up. Once the engine is running, the ECM
uses the CMP as a backup sensor for engine speed.

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is the primary
engine speed indicator for the engine after the engine
is running.

REMOVAL
The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 5.9L diesel
engine is located (1) below the fuel injection pump.
It is bolted to the back of the timing gear housing (7).
1. Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.
2. Remove sensor mounting bolt (6).
3. Carefully twist and pull the sensor from timing gear
housing.
4. Check condition of sensor O-ring.

INSTALLATION
1. Clean out machined hole in back of timing gear
housing.
2. Apply a small amount of engine oil to sensor O-ring
and sensor hole.
3. Install sensor into timing gear housing with a slight
rocking action. Do not twist sensor into position as
damage to O-ring may result.
CAUTION: Before tightening sensor mounting bolt,
be sure sensor is completely flush to back of timing
gear housing (cover). Remove (cover) if sensor
is not flush, damage to sensor mounting tang may
result.
4. Install mounting bolt and tighten. Torque to 9 N·m
(80 in. lbs.).
5. Connect electrical connector (5) to sensor.

I don't have the diagnostic manuals with me here. I will look up the potential causes of the p0341 when I get home if I have timw.

First thing to check is chaffing wires next to the A/C compressor. Will cause similar symptoms.

cool thanks... i posted another question about the chaffing, but have yet to see a photo of where i'm supposed to look. i looked at where i think it should be and have seen no issues.

From the Dodge Diagnostic Manual

Symptom:
P0341-CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR SIGNAL

When Monitored and Set Condition:
P0341-CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR SIGNAL
When Monitored: While the engine is running.
Set Condition: The ECM no longer detects a signal from the Engine Position Sensor.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

INJECTOR DTC’S PRESENT
OTHER DTC’S
CAMSHAFT SENSOR
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
(K72E) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN
(K55) RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K72E) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K55) RETURN CIRCUIT
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
ECM
INTERMITTENT CONDITION

Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the cam sensor harness connector.
Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance between the (K72E) 5-volt supply circuit and the (K53) signal circuit of the sensor.

Is the resistance between 900 and 1100 ohms?
No ! Replace the camshaft sensor

Most of the diagnostic processes check voltages on the wiring harness and sensor.

j,

Thanks, the track is one of my favorite places with the truck.

The CEL will go out on most codes after 4 start and run to normal temp sequences. The code itself will eventually clear if the cuase is not longer present. This could take a lot of start/runs, but will eventually clear if not set again.
