clutch problem 05
clutch problem 05
i am having a problem with my truck going into gear. i can put it in gear when it is shut off but once the engine is running i can not take it from neutral to any of the gears 1-6 or reverse. if it is in gear when i start it i can take off just fine clutch feels normal on take off and drives fine not using it and just powershifting. but if i stop and its in neutral i have to shut truck off to get it in gear and start all over this is a real pain since i plow snow. does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be? i didnt no if my truck would have a clutch break like semis do if that could be the prob. the truck is a 05 quad longbed 6 speed with 4x4 reverse is all the way left and down
"Powershifting" is not a good thing to do. All sorts of clowns who have never torn a transmission apart will tell you otherwise on forums, but these are synchronized transmissions.
Normally when you use the clutch, there are little brass/bronze or fiber clutches on each gear that bring the flywheel and input gearset up to speed to match the running gear speed up to the trasmission. When you "power shift" these tiny clutches have the inertia of the entire truck on one side and the engine forces on the other side. Wears out the baulk rings (also called blocking rings, synchro rings etc. all the same part tho).
Semi's often use "non-synchronized" transmissions that do not require the clutch *if* you know how to operate them. Completely different design. Even these transmissions have certain gears synchronized and those should use clutched shifts. Most manufacturers still specify clutched shifts on these transmissions, but the non synchronized gears have no synchro clutches to wear out.
And +1, probably a bad clutch master cylinder seal, so new hydraulics are in order. If that doesn't fix it, it means that you have some sort of damage to the actual clutch, but it's still a good idea to replace hydraulics so it won't be wasted money if you need a new clutch. For instance, a warped clutch disk will make it drag causing similar symptoms.

That sounds more like hydraulics. I suck out the clutch reservior and put in new fluid every time I bleed the brakes. These are tinker toys compared to the big truck trans - no need for a clutch brake. Craig
