Clatter on the '03's?

My '03 is about 2 weeks old now with about 1300 miles. I have done a few small things to it: Ez on level 2 and an AFE air filter, both about 700 miles ago. Lately I have been getting some of the 'diesel clatter'. Its not very loud really but it was not there 100 miles ago. Its not so bad after it has reached around 200*f temp but still noticeable. Very noticeable when cold and only between 1100~1500 rpm. Also, it does it with or without the EZ box on.

A buddy of mine said something about timing.... that and I have heard once or twice about a cam sensor being bad on an '03.

Anyone know anything about this?

TIA

Re:Clatter on the '03's?

that is normal...mine and my neighbors do it in the same spot on the street. right off of idle after stopping...goes away when warm...there was a thread on this...something to do with the fuel pressure/engine temp i believe...I am old so i may be wrong....but it is normal...
Cameron

Re:Clatter on the '03's?

That is caused by your pilot injection turning off. There is quite a bit of programming on these trucks that is still a mystery and no one knows why the pilot injection is turning off at those times as well as others. Been giving the guys working up the timing/pulse width boxes fits I hear.

Ok, thats a little reassuring to hear. I was worried that I broke something :)

The truck runs great... real smooth and even more powerful that it did when I bought it. this little noise had me worried though... this is my first diesel. Funny how when you buy them new they are very quite but after drivning for a while they start to 'clatter' a little.... Still not nearly as bad as the 2 gens I have heard though ;)

I'm about to install a 5" exhaust kit so I guess that noise will be muted into the past soon enough ;D

Normal, Normal, Normal. ;D

Diesels normally clatter a bit more cold than warm, but it's possible you got a tank of low cetane fuel, and you're getting a lot more knocking. Try a different fuel source or using some additives and see if it makes a difference.

Re:Clatter on the '03's?

Well now... It looks like I did have a bad tank of gas >:( I hit empty today and tossed in 15 gallons and guess what? no more clatter, none what-so-ever, even when cold! Since on empty there is still about 7 gallons left I guess its a 2/3's mix of the old and new... enough to make it better it seems. Feels like it gained (or reclaimed) some power too :)

I'm happy now :) I know some of you guys said it was normal but I might not have described just how loud the clatter was or had got very well.

I guess I got what I deserved though... a lesson about buying cheap gas. I bought it at Diamond Shamrock for $1.23 when everyone else was about $1.39. I filled up on the $1.39 stuff at a Mobile station today.

Do they make a Cetane booster? like the Octane booster stuff for gas motors? Would that help a bad tank of gas? Kinda sucks if you fill up with a bad tank of fuel that it takes 500+ miles to empty it....

I've paid $1.39 for the past two tanks here where I'm at. That's the cheapest though. Most places are asking more. The closest thing to that is $1.43. I pulled up at a Texaco thinking I'd fill up there and then noticed they wanted $1.69. Cranked her back up and drove on down the road... ::)

Hoss, come on over to Saginaw right off 820 at 81/287 business. Albertson's store in north end of Saginaw is where I fill up. It has fuel for $1.30 if you go inside once and get an Albertson's card otherwise it is $1.33. I fill there every week and have never gotten bad fuel in either truck. North Fort Worth. While you are there look for me once a week about 5:15 in a white 03 dually black grill. By the way, I live just north of Rhome, just south of Decatur.

Monte

Fuel is $1.24 per gallon at I-85 Speedway station in Greenville, SOuth Carolina. Been buying my fuel there for about 7 years, never got a bad load. They are a bunch of bung holes in there, but the fuel is cheap, clean and close to the house.

Sorry about this I know it doesn't apply to this topic, but I wanted to tell HOSS that I like the picture of Dan Blocker. Quite a few people around here call me Hoss which I consider a compliment since I always liked his character on Bonaza. Sorry this is way off the topic. Just wanted to get my .02 in. Talk to you later.
