Check engine light, but no code...?
Fired it up after work this morning, had light on. Stopped along the way home somewhere, so I did the key cycle thing, it had all dashes while it was thinking about it, then said done...nothing...tried again when I got home, same thing. Opinions? Thanks!

OBD II scan tools are reasonably inexpensive now. I bought one for $99 at Pep Boys. So far I'd say it's saved me $400 or more in costs for a shop to hook up to my old 2000 Dodge diesel, a 2001 Dodge 1500, and the wife's 1998 Intrepid we no longer own.
It will make things much simpler. |
I myself am going with a code scanner. I have found out that the key trick works sometimes, but other times even with CEL on it won't pull codes, just gives you 'done'.

From what I understand the 06 and newer trucks do not have the key three times trick, since these trucks are equipt with the CAN-BUS ECM programming. This also goes for the 07 trucks too. If you own a 02-05 then you can use the key on three times. Also be warned, if the code may clear it self after three ignitions starts with no similiar problems.
If purchasing a code reader choose one that can be updated and reads both OBD I and II along with the CAN-BUS programming. Shawn |
The key off-on trick works on my 2007 CTD. At first I couldn't figure out why it didn't display and finally got it to work by cycling the key faster. Just about as fast as you can move your wrist.
On odd thing I've noticed is that both times I've shown a CEL there were always 2 codes listed, a P2000 was shown both times but the other code was different. The technicians "fixing" the truck never did any work on the P2000 - sort of like it was invisible to their star scan stuff. I've read that the P2000 is a "soft" CEL that doesn't actually change how the vehicle operates but I'm still a little confused about why the techs ignore it. |
I saw the same thing 3 days ago. I hooked up my PPE and had no code. Cycled the key and light went off. Go figure.

Yeah, that's the boat I'm in. I'll just see if it goes off in the next day or 2 here, and if it does, I'll leave it alone. Must not be that important. I'm doing my darndest not to mess with this truck for now, mainly due to the fact that I keep messing with my car and boat, and house w/ new garage just built. Thanks guys,
