Changing Axle Fluid

Will be changing front & rear axle fluid this weekend. Will be using the Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil. Is six quarts per axle about right? Are the gaskets reusable or do I need to seal w/ silicone sealant?

WHOA! 6 is WAY too much! I think 2 - 3 per is about right. Seal with silicone, but read a shop manual first. There are slip modifiers to add if you have limited slip differential, and the level of the fluid is not to the hole. Its not as simple as dumping and changing, but I commend you for asking. I about ruined my limited slip because I did not add the slip modifier.

Front is 2.4 qts and the rear 3.8 qts. And the gaskets are reusable.

MikeyB's numbers sound about right to me. Do not use silicone, just reuse the stock gaskets. Throw on a PML diff cover so you can just drain and refill it the next time

I put a PML cover on 2 weeks ago when I changed my fluid and it took 4.5 qts with the PML. The PML is great and $100 less than the Mag-Hytek at http://www.yourcovers.com.

Geico, remember you have a 2nd gen that I believe has a Dana Axle. The 3rd gens have AAM axles so the LS diffs don't need friction modifiers if you use the right gear oil.

Mark, the Mobil 1 75w90 is what I use and it seemed to work great. I'd have plenty of it on hand to do the job and if you don't use it, take it back or keep it for the next go around.

I agree with Lightman and WA4SLC about using a diff cover as it makes it easier to drain and comes with a "dipstick" style magnet to "filter" the fluid between changes. Also, it holds more fluid. I went with Mag-Hytec but the PML looks like a great product too. Good luck!
