Can I burn heating oil?
We are doing an oil to gas heating conversion in our house and currently have about 150 gallons of heating oil in the tank. There have been some delays, so we may still end up burning this in the furnace... but if not, can I burn it in my truck? Are there risks?
My neighbor told me they put all kinds of stuff in the trucks he uses at work...
I've gotta get rid of the oil somehow and if I can burn it in my truck that would be handy.

What kind of heating oil do you have? Furnace oil is #2 diesel, Stove oil is #1 diesel. Straight #1 will burn hotter, higher egt's(I would not run straight #1). Quite a few fuel stops do a 50/50 blend in the winter months.
I have run furnace oil in my truck, I too, converted my home from oil to natural gas, had about 200 gallons left over. Mine was dyed red, if you get caught running it you could face fines, but I was not going to give it away, at nearly $3.50 a gallon last heating season.

It's whatever they sell for a furnace in the northeast... #2 heating oil I think, but I'm not sure. It could be dyed and illegal? I bought this tank more than a year ago and paid IIRC $3.50/gallon - I figured that included any taxes NJ could dream up...
If I do pump it into the truck, should I filter it somehow? (how?) Add anything to it? My truck doesn't have a cat or dpf so that's safe... I can watch EGT if that might go wacko?
I just hate to save a few hundred on fuel and cost myself a few thousand on some part of the fuel system that craps out because of something.

it will most likely be dyed since it is not meant for "on road" use. so if they test diesel cars/trucks in your area for dyed fuel it will probably cost you more than you will save. best way to find out if it is dyed is to put some in a clear container and see what color it is. it should burn just fine in your truck but i would find a way to filter it before putting it in the tank unless you have a really good aftermarket filtration system on your truck.
The same oil delivery truck that comes to your house to deliver furnace oil, turns right around and delivers to construction sites, for their diesel powered equipment, it is dyed red and is absent hyway taxes, that's what is against the law, you did not pay your fair share of taxes......
As long as the fuel is not contaminated in some manner, it will not hurt a thing.

I"ve used heating oil many times in the past. It will not harm anything. The two different oils are based more on where you are at. Up here we have #1 and #2. For above ground tanks and below ground tanks, similar to df#1 and DF#2. ANd it isn't dyed up here. The dye gels up in colder temps way too easy. And well you didn't pay taxes on it so it is illegal.
