Blue Smoke on First Cold Start

Hi,

My 2004.5 has identical symptoms. A slight roughness and blue smoke for about 10 seconds then cleans up and runs smooth and clean. I have about 35K on mine and it has been doing it since about 20K. No oil consumption noted between changed either.

I will admit to driving mine to easy and rarely using full throttle. Mine also gets great mileage with empty trips usually getting 20.5 or so.

So if someone has encountered this and solved it it will be nice to hear the solution.
However if it does not indicate a pending failure it is not bad enough to bother me. I have not had mine to the dealer for diagnosis.

usually blue smoke is indicative of an oil leak, my gunny he has a duramax that has the same problem except white smoke, and he found out its just enough of a leak to make smoke on startup, I would start worrying when you have blue smoke at idle at like a stop sign or something.

oh btw my moms old 97 powerstroke would do the same thing too, blue smoke at startup, my step dad being the idiot he is said it had something to do with how hopped up powerstrokes are, anyway it's been that way for years and still runs like a champ, its got wear and tear but still runs fine.

When is the last time you worked the truck really good? I assume you have changed the fuel filter. What kind of oil are you using in it? In the cooler months I would expect this issue, but not so much in the summer.

I have changed the fuel filter with in the few weeks. the truck gets worked a lot. mosty with my rv 10,000. dealer did the flash for smoke&performance. that made it worse. i am running rotella 5-40 syn. change it every 5,000. if it was cold i could see it. but it's 70+ in the mornings.

The reason I asked was I used to have the same issue a few years ago at 100,000 and it would happen more often when the tempature was in the 30's or lower. I was hearing alot of talk from people using ashless 2 stroke oil and I wanted to give it a try to see if it made a difference or was BS. I have been putting 1 oz of 2 stroke oil per gallon of fuel for 2 years now and the smoke plus the shakey start for the first 2 seconds went away on winter startups. Quieter running also and I use this with a cetane booster too.

Your issue has to be an injector. One of them is not right. Ask them if they have done a return flow test on them.

you have an injector that is leaking just a bit. . . when it sits overnight it leaks some extra fuel in a cylinder and when you crank in the morning your rough idle and blue smoke are the net result. You can run a good injector cleaner, change your fuel filter again, have your injectors leak tested. Or do nothing. Lots of folks here will say this is normal, not really, does a new motor do this . . . . .no. These high pressure injectors are touchy and I for one will upgrade my fuel filter to 2 micron when I find the funds.

I agree it is an injector. I will be talking to them tomarrow to get an update. my dealer is not closeing but they have down sized a lot. so they dont have many tech's anymore. I will find out what test they have done so far on the injectors.return flow test, leak test. I dont think it's normal at all. it just started and few weeks a go. never did it before that. do think it could be from letting the truck sit to much. i don't drive it to much anymore. but when i do i'm towing.
thanks guys

I run diesel kleen with cetane booster, and I will get some smoke sometimes that might be it, I ran some b10 biodiesel through the beast and that loosened up some junk so you could try that as a good cleaning approach just make sure to get a new fuel filter and change it after you run a tank of bio through it. I talked to my mom and they are having some fuel rail issues and one of their injectors leaks a little too and that is what causes her powerstroke to blow blue some smoke when it starts so I know it's a powerstroke but it's the same type of problem so it might give you some ground to go on.
