If it were me, I'd go this route especially since you don't know how the last owner treated her. I'd get all new bearings and get the whole assembly balanced and everything blueprinted. Cheap? No. If you're going to push it a little when it comes to power? Then it's money VERY well spent.

Yep then you will know exactly what you have,,, and spend a little extra on the Valve train inspection/Refurb since that is where your initial falure occured!!!! JMHO with only 60K on the motor,,, the crank and rods should be fine,,, I bet the head might clean up if it is not cracked replace those remaining valves,,, ive seen worse run in fact the one Im speaking of is still on the road has been studded and makes 600+ RWHP on Diablo Sport Predator

are all the head from 03-06 interchangeable?

When I had to replace my head on my 03 I found out that Cummins doesn't offer a 03 head anymore. I had to buy an 05 or newer style head so yes I think you would be fine with any of the heads but I wouldn't buy a used head. For about 800-1000 you can get a brand new complete head.

I just saw that there's that ported and polished 03 head for sale in the classifieds... thought it might be a good buy
