I do the same thing, but I don't think it's the ideal thing to do. When you pull the filter you have all of the "washdown" from the draining filter mixing with the filtered fuel. I'm on my 3rd filter doing it that way, and I've experienced no ill-effects.

 

I am with ya Commatoze. I have not changed my filter on my new 03 ( on 4k on her) but on my 02 I would put the new filter in place and them let it sit for a while. Them I would drain a small amount of fuel out of the housing to drain anything that may have fallen into it. I probably over due the fuel filter bit because I change it about every 9.5 to 10 K. Probably over Kill. It is best to probably drain and clean the housing if you have the time and do not mind the hassle.

 

My first change on my '02 was that black, if not blacker.
Changed at 10,000 miles.

2nd change, at 20,000 miles was just a medium/dark gray.

5,000 to go for the 3rd change, expecting it to be the same shade as the 2nd, if not a little lighter.

what is this 1 and 1/8" socket you guys are talking about? Maybe I have one and am just not visualizing what it is...?

 

A little cylinder shaped device that is hollowed out in such a manner that it will accept the head of a nut (or bolt). This device then attaches to a ratchet to provide the needed torque to loosen (or tighten) the bolt (or nut). Specifically, a 1-1/8" socket is a socket designed to accept a bolt or nut with a 1-1/8" head.

 

See hoss I told you I could provide stupid questions I think thats a large socket eh? I don't know that I have any that large.

 

I don't know that I do either. I also don't know why it's needed. I don't recall seeing any kind of nut on top of the canister. This is one of those things where a picture would speak a thousand words....

Come on Hoss, you sounded like you knew what you were talking about Yes, could someone please take a pic or two of the fuel filter top and how to remove it? I'm sure its easy once you're looking at it, but seeing my truck is STILL in D1 status :'( I haven't had that luxury!

 

Hehehe....I haven't changed my filter yet. ;D Haven't even looked at how to change it. I do think I know where it is though. ;D

 

I won't say you NEED the 1-1/8" socket, but it sure makes it easy... The canister lid has the 1-1/8" hex head molded into it, and if you've got the socket, it makes spinning it off and on a breeze.

 

How big is the cannister, could you use a strap wrench to loosen it?

 

Oh well, I just ordered one, it was only a couple bux.

By the way, the 1-1/8" socket will not work for the 2004 model trucks. For that one you will need a 1-3/4" deep socket with two 90 degree adaptors, a 6" extension and a 12" extension.
