I can't stand shopping or Wally world.Charge card and big brown delivers all the lubes I need.I even run their hyd.oil in my New Holland tractor.I use and have used the 15w40 in several diesels.Waited until 15k to change to it in this truck.Ran a 1985 Chevy Caprice 305 4bbl.on the A words 10w30 for 200k and changed once a year or 25k whichever was first.Oil filters at 7500 miles.Sold the car with 250k and no blow by/sludge,clean pcv system etc.We drove it 100 miles a day back and forth to work.Ran the A word auto trans fliud also. With a flush every 60k and filter once in 5 years.

Sure its expensive but so is the truck. I use it with an Amsoil bypass filter with extended drain and use with oil analyzers to check my oil. Sure its expensive but I've got 30,000 miles on my oil and everything looks great according to my last analysis.

Been using it since Jan 2004 at 7500 miles. Change oil & filter every 7500 miles (Schedule B). I know the oil could go farther, but not into extended drains or running bypass filters. And, you have to watch the wording on the Amsoil Maintenance recommendations too. Basically, the oil has to come out every 6months unless your using Oil Analysis. If you have a dealer telling you you can run 1 year and 20k miles without changing the oil, they are WRONG! Do a search on this site for info over the last year about the Maintenance recommendation on the Amsoil. So, make sure you completely understand the oil change interval recommendation! Pay the extra $20 a year to become a Preferred Customer and all the products are cheaper. No complaints other than the S&H charges.

And, Redline makes 15w-40 Diesel Oil too. The Mobil 1 4x4, repackaged Delvac-1 is great synthetic oil too.

The amsoil 15w40 is NOT expensive when compared to common synthetics. It can be had for around $15/gal. Let's remember Mobil 1 Truck/Suv 5w40 is around $20/gal. Redline makes a nice diesel 15w40 synthetic as well, but I think it's even more expensive.

Lightman is correct about the Amsoil &
Redline is a bit more expensive: Don't know if they sell it by the gallon?

Last of Amsoiil 15w-40 (code AME) (11/23/04) was $61.80 for 4 gallons plus the $10.56 S&H. & 5.43 Sales Tax.

Redline is $7 per quart at:

"but i hear stories of the dodge dealers giving people a hard time for warranty purposes if the are using redline or amsoil because something about its not up certain ratings?? "

Amsoil SAE 15w-40 Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil API Service CI-4,CH-4,CF,CF-2,SL,SJ, Global DHD-1, CUMMINS CES 20076,20077,20078, Daimler Chrysler 228.3, 229.1 and more directly off the back of the 1 gallon jug:

Redline MTL API Categories GL-1, GL-3, GL-4
Redline 75W-90 Gear Oil API GL-5, GL-6, MT-1, MIL-L-2105E & SAE J2360

I could take pics, but that's not necessary. What does the Dodge Owner's Manual say?

If memory serves me correctly, it's CI-4 oil in engine, GL-4 oil in Transmission, and GL-5 gear lube in frt and rear ends.

I'm gonna go watch Daytona 500 now!

Ah...I didn't realize you could get Amsoil 15w/40 in 1 gallon jugs. BTW, I think you can safely use Schedule "A" (for the engine oil/filter) when using the Amsoil stuff. I would use the Fleetguard Startapore filter in any case.

i am a dealer for Amsoil, and i use their products in every thing i own. i run the series 3000,5w30 diesel oil, and love it. seems to run a bit cooler, and i would think the turbo will cool faster as well.i don't have an EGT gauge yet, but soon.
it's cold here where i live and it seems to start faster and run smoother when cold.
i also run the cetane boost as well which seems to help in the morning when it is coldest. i have only pluged in twice since owning it(only bought it 3 weeks ago)and that just to se if the block heater works, and to have a little faster warm up for heat in the cab.
i did notice a slight mileage increase, but i also did the rear axle and the transfer case fluids.
anyway, i have sold this oil (5w30) to many others with diesels, and nobody has come back to say they didn't like it!!!
i am sure there are lots of other good quality oils out there, and i think that is the important thing here, good quality oil is a must for any thing like a diesel or turbo where heat and pulling/towing are factors.
my 2 cents

As I posted earlier I used the 15w40 Amsoil in this truck for the first time last week.Handn't driven it until today.Went from Athens Ga.To Charlotte N.C.towing about 8600 lbs.Any way stopped a few times etc.and noticed a stink like burning.Wife and I both said at the same time its the OIL! Handn't used Rotella in a few years but it was a familer same kind of smell! Never noticed the Amsoil smell in my other trucks before.By the way by the overhead I averaged 11.8 re' setting it several times and never going faster then 68 mph.

Amsoil is technically 'rated' for CI-4 , not API licensed. I'm not sure how picky DC's warranty department is, but it could be a deciding factor should you have an oil related failure. That said, oil related failures are very rare.
