6-speed Tests

I saw this new report on PickupTruck.com. I guess I won't race any new Fords when the new truck gets here. I have read the report twice and it seams the Forn and maybe the Chevy will out pull my new Dodge. As stated in the report the 1/4 mile may not be the best test but we will see in the next set of tests. I guess the next test will be a long pull up a grade.

I was looking at the trucks used and the Dodge weights in at almost 1000 pounds more. It also had a 4.10 rear end. I am not sure how the 4.10 would affect the 1/4 mile or top speed test. I would think it would effect the top end because the truck would run out of RPMs and the unloaded test may also be effected, I not sure I am smart enough to know how. It should be an advatage when pulling a hill.

I guess I am disappointed I hoped Dodge would be on top for at least a year. I still think the Dodge will be a good truck.

Just a side note, the Dodge was the only Dually, that would make alot of the weight difference, and weight for sure will make a difference in 1/4 mile times. The times are pretty close.

I sure hope your not going to buy a truck with a manual tranny for pulling a load based on what a bunch of gear jammers do at a drag strip. Sounds like the manufacturers have seduced you into believing big horse power is everything, remember some of those decrepat old 2nd gen trucks with the little HP (245 HO) were beating up on 300HP Duramax's. Off the line those big V8's pound our poor little Cummins until you hook a load on and start crawling up 5 miles of 8% grade, not saying they dont do a good job but never seen one stock slingshot by me yet with an equal load on. Also we have lots of them Fords at work and the 6spd in them is no where near the NV5600 for smooth or lifting a load. Looking for a stock truck that hauls off the line buy 8.0L Chev with the Allison and see how many guys stick around with stock trucks and $100 bills to throw away. They actually dont tow half bad either, just dont expect fuel milage like a Dodge. PK

I'm going to echo Mr. Kennedy here. I'm not sure what kind of loads they were yanking along, but my 01 was never beat up the river hill with a 30K load on 'er, unless it was another Dodge doing the beating. ;D

Rod

First, let me state I am no die hard brand loyalist. I've owned 'em all, boys. I don't believe my Dodge is the best, I just think it's the best FOR MY NEEDS of the trucks currently offered. They all have their pros and cons.

Towing purists generally acknowledge the Dodge Cummins is THE setup for down-low, pure-grunt brute towing. Among the off road crew I hang with, the Dodge Cummins excells at getting and keeping things moving when the load is heavy, the trail is gnarly, and conditions are at the worst. The others do a better job on the high end (speed wise).

Yeah, if bombed the Dodge Cummins can be fast too. But, stock it's setup to pull like an ox, not sprint like a rabbit. Our engines hit the fat of the torque peak at 1800 RPM's - let's see the others match that.

If I want sizzlin' 1/4 mile times I'll get a Vette or a Viper. For towing and real world truckin' - I'll stick with the Dodge Cummins.

Best to y'all
Bill

Re:6-speed Tests

I want a 6 speed. I like the idea of having more control. I also don't think that an empty 1/4 mile time means much of anything.

I have also done alot of research into HP vs. Torque. Most of you may know but horse power is just a math formula. HP = torque X RPM/5252. Alot of engines that have high HP numbers have low to average torque but high RPM numbers. Alot of the increase in HP in the gas engines are based on torque going up a little and RPMs going up alot. The torque must follow the RPMs (longer torque curve).

It appears the V8s are increasing HP by increasing RPMs. The PS 6.0 has torque is only 5 pounds higher than the Dodge HO but the HP is about 20 more. But if you compair what they produce at about 2900 RPM you will find the difference in HP to be very little. The Dodge at full torque (555 ft lb.) would produce 306 hp. The real torque must start down before 2900 RPM. The Ford produces 309 HP at 2900 RPMs if the torque is at max (560 ft lb). The Ford would get max HP at about 3045 RPMs.

If I am thinking right that would account for some of the difference in the 1/4 mile times. The Dodge drivers had to shift sooner to keep the truck in the sweet spot. The 4.10 would not have helped either. The RPMs would have gone up faster and the truck would not have gained as much speed. More shifts. More power but less HP.

It appears the V8s run more like gas engines. The CTD should do better on the clime. Thats where the long flat torque curve should shine. That is if Dodge has given us real numbers.

I think this test shows us that all the trucks are very close.
