6.7 cam vs. 5.9 cam

I am reading about guys deleting the EGR and getting clean oil again, does this mean the 6.7 cam has the in-cylinder EGR removed due to the external??

If so would a OE 6.7 cam work in my 05 5.9??

I was kinda hopin someone would reply to this question, I would do the same thing to my 06

AH64ID 01-11-2009 12:12 PM

another bump...

mwdean 01-15-2009 08:42 PM

what is in-cylinder egr?

2006BLKMegacab 01-16-2009 12:53 AM

My understanding of it is that they put an extra little bump on the exhaust lobe of the cam to open the valve on the intake stroke to suck some exhaust gas back into the engine, kinda the dumbest thing i can think of, im gonna call cummins to see if they will sell me an "Off road use only" cam to put in it to clean it up

From looking at cam specs the 04.5+ 5.9 has the least separation of any truck ever offered. 98.5*, if memory serves. So the exhaust valve is closing before the exhaust it exhausted, keeping some of it in the cylinder.

No they do no have an extra "bump" on the camshaft.

cbrahs 01-16-2009 01:20 PM

the extra "bump" would be duration holding the valve open longer.

is there any thing stoppin me from goin to cummins and buyin an "off road use only" non emissions compliant cam and stickin that in it?

Do they make one?

I would guess a cam from a HPCR QSB would work well.. but not 100% sure on what tier-2 marine emissions are, compared to over the road.

And I wonder about the cost difference.

They do build a tier-2 QSB 5.9 but i cant find the cam specs yet, i did find this though,

http://marine.cummins.com/mrn/public...Id=13&menuId=1

at least it would be a place to start when talkin to cummins service department about it?

Based on the exhaust manifold temp of 1300* I would guess the emissions aren't are stringent.. so maybe no in-cylinder EGR?

The other thing that dirties our oil is the dreaded third injection event. It's placement in the combustion cycle is too late and results in the dirty burn and oil we get. From what I have read on the subject, no one has been able to move it successfully. There are aftermarket cams that do away with the overlap problem, but the oil does not clean up because of the 3rd event.
