555 vs. 600
555 vs. 600
Looking for an on the lot truck, probably a month or so before I buy so choices will be limited. Also, I have fairly specific list of what I want so, I may have to take the truck I can find, but given the choice would y'all take a 555 or a 600?
Truck will be a quad cab shortbox 6 spd 4x4, used mainly for hway, about 5000 miles a year towing 8000 lb and and maybe a few thousand towing 15k.
I will want to keep it fairly stock, so I don't void the warranty, so I probably won't chip it right away.
555 pros: Better mileage, less emssisions controls
555 cons: Lower numbers, smaller turbo/exhuast, questionable fuel pump (everyone I know has had the stock pump fail)
600 pros: Probably more aftermarket support in the future, fuel pump, turbo, exhaust and a few others already pretty good, supposdly slighter higher rpm power band, preferable for high speed that I see.
600 cons: New release, some new problems, limited support today, cat and other emmission stuff, slightly pricier

Hate to say this, but if you're looking for a very specific lot truck, you might make the 555/600 a don't care. You've listed off the pros and cons. IMHO there isn't a strong pull either way. So if your choices are already limited, why limit them further.

Essentially I want a great drivetrain, and if I can combine that with some nice options, so much the better.
Thanks

RAMV,
The 555 has lower numbers but it is not underpowered by any stretch of the imagination. If you want significantly more power you'll be getting a chip.
I haven't had my fuel pump replaced and I'm wondering how likely it is that it will have a problem. Is this really an issue?
Personally, I'm thrilled with the 555. My other one was a first gen. Wow, what a huge difference! But even that one is an amazing workhorse! The difference between the 555 and the 600, no biggee. Get the features you want and get on with life.

555 and 600 have the exact same lift pump and it has not surfaced as being a problem. You have it mistaken with earlier trucks (2nd gen).

Exactly how many people do you know that have had their fuel pump replaced? I know four people with 555's (co-workers, neighbors) and not one has had a fuel pump replaced. Mine has almost 38,000 with no problems at all including no problem with the fuel pump.

A co-worker recently developed the problem with his personal truck too. (no chip, hauls horses etc)
The local dealership claimed that the 600 was in part due to the pump failures on earlier models, so DC could avoid a recall. They also claimed they had yet to see a truck back for more then one pump although friends of mine in different states have had theirs in more.
fuel or lift pump? which?
The CP3 HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) is a very reliable pump. Some have developed leaking seals but besides that they are pretty good units.
I have read/heard of few lift pump failures.

The problem has been described as follows: Under load, the truck will stall. After letting it cool, it will start back up and run fine. Initially the problem is intermittant. After time, it becomes more regular. Apparently the pump gets too hot (which is why the chip trucks are worse, more fuel flow) and siezes up but once it cools, it will start spinning again.
Daimler at first claimed it was bad fuel but then began replacing the pumps under warranty. These are all 555 trucks and mostly autos.
One friend did a $1k aftermarket upgrade (not sure which pump he got) and claims it solved the problem, plus gives better milage and power.
I'm a newbie and I didn't know about the problems with mileage in the 600 when I ordered mine.. I Love the truck but might have looked for a 555 If I had known. The whole cat thing is B.S. and a mileage killer IMHO.

It also seems like cold weather is harder on the pumps as it lots of towing (ie hotshots running 14k trailers all the time)

RAMV, this is all NEWS to us. I have 27,000 miles without any problems. I find it strange that this problem hasn`t been mentioned on this board, and you know 4 guys with the same problem
I`m not calling you a liar, but i find it verry strange

The cat is not the problem on the 600. From what I understand...it is the third injection event that is supposed to "help" with emissions that wastes fuel.
I have personally removed my cat and have since reinstalled it because I found no noticeable difference in mileage.
GO WITH THE 555!!!
