#5 injector line leak, questions
I was up in the mountains yesterday. Fuel fumes and mist started from under the hood. I took a look and fuel was spraying from the injector #5 line next to the injector around the nut. Due to circumstances I was force to drive about 8 miles, losing a 1/4 tank of fuel in the process. I am the process of cleaning the engine compartment and am going to remove the line. Cracked line? o-ring? any sugestions. On a side note, fuel worked it's way into the cab and soaked the driver side carpet so will be removing that also. Any products that are good at removing fuel odor? Thanks Robert
I can almost promise you it's the #4 injector line. The counting can be misleading! I argued with the parts guy before finally removing the line and taking my wife's car down to the dealership only to be proven wrong.
The point on the flare where the line and the furel are fused has cracked and there is no fixing it other than replacing it. I can't remember how much the line was but it was one of the cheaper ones... $100 or less I believe.

Mine cracked at roughly 40K (on the interstate with the wife, kid, dog, etc...basically worst possible time!!). Anyway, It was the #4 injector line and was warrentied by Daimler.
This should have DEF been a recall! (There was another guy broken down about a week ago on the EMERGENCY forum with the same problem). Easy fix, just a PIA to deal with....

Yeah! that line is very sensitive to excessive vibration!
I was driving to work one morning and noticed some excess vibration from the rear end... 2 days later I finally got a chance to go get my wheels balanced (that's what I thought the problem was) and it didn't fix the problem... after 3 or 4 more days it dawned on me to check my U-Joints... sure enough there it was... fixed that and 2 days later the injector line blew!
Crazy! I never would have guess that Bad U-Joints would cause a fuel line problem, but hey... you learn something new every day!

Well, I picked up the new line, installed and back running. I think that I will pick up an extra one just to be on the safe side. Now, if I can just get all the fuel out of the carpet. Tried various cleaners, but think that I will have to strip the interior to do it right. Thanks again guys. Robert
Yup 07's too. Mine went at about 70k mi. SO common in fact, I stopped at the dealer, told him I needed and injector line for an 07 5.9 and he said "#4?"
I said yes and he said that's good becasue they're the only ones we stock and we sell alot of them.

I'm sure I'm missing something here. If this is something that won't fail as long as it stays tight, why not routinely tighten it (e.g. every oil change or so) instead of carrying a spare and waiting for it to fail?
I agree 100% with the first part of your sentence. However, I still think it's a good idea to carry a spare, even if you do tighten it routinely. We're about to pull a pretty good sized 5th wheel from southeast NM to Yellowstone so I checked ALL fuel lines and isolators yesterday with a wrench AND picked up a spare #4 line just in case.
