280 70 17 back to 265 70 17 Toyo AT
 

I switch to Toyo 285 70 17 about 6 months ago on a 2007, 2500, 5.9 48RE 4X4, 373 rear end. The truck look great however I'm not really to impressed with the difference when pulling the horses. Even though I have the speedo changed to the 285 settings. The truck gear ratio changes when you go to a taller tire that effects towing. I'm switching bak next week to the 265's.

Has any one changed back to the 265's and are happy they changed back?

Have any of you had good luck with the Toyo 265 70's AT??

I run them and get about 36-40,000 out of a set.Just make sure to rotate them regularly,

I don't tow heavy enough to make a difference in towing power, but I hate the 265's for highway driving. Trying to run 85mph out to Grand Junction yesterday, 50% tread 265's was putting me at 2800rpms at 85mph. Can't wait to get my winter 285's back on.

I'm thinking of going back to 265s too. I have the same situation where the 3:73s and the bigger tires together just seem to make the truck sluggish when I tow. Luckily for me I still have my set of stock wheels from when I got the truck. I'm definitely switching for a trip to Tampa where I will be towing my trailer. We'll see how I like it when I get back. Then I'll decide if those will stay on and the 285s get sold...

With the manual and my 315's I'd never go back, sloppy 4 speed auto, maybe. Low gear is no real difference and you get the advantage of lower RPM in 5th and 6th.

I find it hard to believe that that size is effecting your towing that much. When I went from the stock size tires to 285/70/17 bfg ats.....it was barely noticeable even at stock power level.

Then once I added the Smarty....wheww.....power galore.

Then later I went to BFG 35'' mud terrains, and I did feel a noticeable difference. With the extra power added from the Smarty it still pulled great but I could tell.

Last go round, I went down in size to 285/75/17 Nitto terra grapplers and I think I have found my new permanent tire. It does seem to pull much easier.

But im not going back to stock size tires. The 265s are just to small.

My suggestion is keep your current tires, save your money...and invest it in a Smarty and I guarantee you will not feel like your truck in underpowered with 285s.

I read this with much interest. I'm tire shopping and saving my pennies, I settled on the Dura Grappler 285/70. Mine is a 2500 2wd auto with the 4.10 gear. I'm looking forward to the better freeway cruising ability, I think I might even squeak a little bit better mpg at my cruise speed. My last trip to Wa state averaged me 21 mpg (hand calc) for almost 3000 miles, almost made it to Portland from LA on 1 tank, I love this truck...........

Same here. I went to 285s and even towing 11,000 lbs didn't notice any difference I could feel. Zip,zero,zilch.

When I went to 295/70/17 Toyo M/Ts,I could feel a major difference. I didn't even bother towing my fifth wheel with them because I have a feeling the stock clutch wouldn't take it. Its not so much the height as the weight of the Toyos. The Toyos are about 30lbs per tire more. Just takes a lot more to get them rolling.

Picked up a set of new take off 265s for the spring/summer towing season. The take offs were the least expensive option. Its almost criminal to have those tiny azz tires on my truck,but they're cheaper than a new clutch.

Not long ago I put on the 285/75-17 Toyo ATs. Shifted and drove like garbage till I had the ecm recalibrated for the proper revs. Now it is fine.

I have a Quad X2, and have it on 25 or 45hp setting when towing. That little extra pep works wonders. It is a little slower off the line, but crusing down the highway is so much better. My mpg while towing has gone up since the tire size change. I can't see ever going back to 265s.

I run 315 as my setup once the snow stops flying (end of april-oct) and then put the stock 265 back on for winter conditions.
Love the 315's as I roll down the hiway at 75 mph and 1700 rpm, but power can be a little doggy at times when loaded. I just cancel overdrive and it puts me back into an rpm that is close to where it would be with stock tires.
The 265's are the best paramaters for the truck. But when you get into the hiway speeds, your R's are going to be higher.

I was thinking of going with 285/70/17's (32.7") also with 3.73's. I’m also considering 275/65/20's (34.1"). I noticed that if you build a new truck online it comes with 3.42 gears, with 3.73's and 4.10's as an option. Going from stock tires to 34.1" tires changes the effective gear ratio to 3.43 - the same as standard equipment on a new truck..... I'm wondering if it's not the height of the tire that causes the power loss, but a combination if increased weight, and rolling resistance due to a more aggressive design and softer side wall (ex. load range D)????

Pulling power is one of the reasons I switched back to 285s from 315s.

It's not the highway pulling power so much as when trying to get started with a heavy trailer. I've got 3.73 and a Smarty, buit still pulling out of the hole is slower with bigger tires. Once up to speed you can always stay in Tow/Haul if necessary to keep the EGR down or to save your TC.

315s look great, but they drive the truck too much for me. 285s are a good compromise.

You know, I think I will stick with the 285's. The definitely look alot better. I think when these wear out I will have to reconsider. The 265's definitely tow better with a 48re however the cost of changing back to 265's is probably not worth the trade off. Thanks for the feedback.
