235 / 80 R17 - Any running these on a SRW 4x4 2500 quad cab

Tires are part of the drive train, so I hope I picked the right forum.
I desire a tall & skinny tire therefore I am thinking about E rated either the nitto dura terra or the Nitto Dura grapplers in a 235 / 80 R17 tire size, capable of 3085 lbs per tire on a single rear wheel 2004.5 dodge 4x4 2500 quad cab.

If anyone is running this size of a tire, please let me know if you like the size or if anyone is running either nitto Dura tire, please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
SAS

All you really need to do is check the rim width and make sure the tire you choose allows that width for that size. It differs between tire manufacturer. For example, you rim may be a 17x8 and only an XYZ 235/80R17 will fit. I have been considering doing the same as I think I want a Michelin M&S

Not the exact same size, but many of us 2nd genners run 235-85-16's on SRW 2500s with good luck.

I believe they are the same size, just the aspect ratio changed for the 17" rim.

I have 235/80-17 on mine. They're Michelin LTX M/S. They're the same diameter as the stock tire, just a narrower tread.

The reason I chose the narrower tire is that I'm not taking it off road (much), and do a lot of medium towing and highway miles. Smaller treads are quieter, and have less drag and rolling resistance.

The performance is excellent. They dig down into the snow and ice and really get the truck moving. Very impressive. There's less road noise in my truck than in my '08 Mustang. Smooth, responsive ride.

The narrower tread makes them look smaller than they really are. They almost look undersized. Nect time I might step a size in diameter, but keep the same tread width.

How many miles do have on them so far??

Only a few thousand. Towing, highway crusing, mountains, some light off road, and some medium towing.

The last set of these I had (on a differant truck, same usage) lasted almost 60K. In replaced all 4 when one got a big hole in it.

235 / 80 r17

Thanks bob for the response.

I wish I could find a taller 245 tire than the 245 80 R17 but to date, I have not found such a tire. The next taller tire I found was in the 285 series and I feel that is getting pretty wide.

I might give the Dura terra's a try with the 235 80 R17 size.

My michelins are absolutely crap, basically a car tire, horrible in snow.

I just switched from 35'' BFG Mud Terrain KM2s (with 40K on them) to Nitto Terra Grapplers in 285/75/17. I think they are a great size for our trucks. Definately thinner than the 35's but almost as tall. My truck runs very very quiet now and feels so light and nimble in comparison. Mileage went up about 2 miles per gallon too as best I can tell. (hand calculated)

Anyway, good luck with your new Dura Grapplers. I started to get those but I still needed a little bit of off-road traction too and settled on the Terras. If you decide to go up to 285s....the 285/75/17s might be an option for ya.

That's how I felt about the original equipment Michelins. With any bit of snow or ice, it needed 4x4 just to get moving at the end of my drive way. They were a terrible snow/ice tire. I don't know how the original owner kept them on there for 28K miles. I got rid of them after the first snow fall.

285 / 75 R17 Nitto Terra Grappler

I think I am leaning towards the 285 75 17 tires. When I ran the RPM numbers, looks like the truck will 1740 rpm at 68 mph. I will probably see no mileage increase due to the tire width increasing from 265 to 285s but the truck will be slightly quieter while driving.

Has any one had the nitto terra grappler's in the snow? how do they perform? I like BFGs, great all round tire but they only offer a 70 series tire in a 285.

Has anyone see a mpg decrease when going from 265s to 285s?

I have only had mine a couple of thousand miles. But I am really liking them so far. Having run the stock 265 BFG Rugged Trails, 285/70/17 BFG TA KOS, 35'' BFG mud terrains, and now the 285/75/17 Nitto TGs........I have to say I would buy them again.

No matter what you buy, there is always a compromise somewhere. The 35's look nice....but they are heavy, hard to balance, hurt fuel mileage, make towing a little harder.

The stockers are way to small. The 285/70s are a little better.

But I really feel like the 285/75/17 size is perfect on our trucks. I got my mileage back......these are E rated....and they look nice. My truck feels much more nimble and quick compared to the 35's. They give you most of the height 33.82'' in diameter....without all the extra width.

Good luck with your decision. Toyo also makes the same size in 285/75/17.
