2004 no start

Hi all
My 2004 5.9 2500 stopped running last week so I had the truck towed to the dealership. They told me that the problem was either a lift pump or an injector pump so they ordered a lift pump which they will change Monday. I think they are just throwing on parts instead of trouble shooting If the lift pump doesn't fix the problem then I am going to tow the truck back home and try to fix it myself. Now a question is how do you tell if the engine is a 2004 or a 2004.5 Thanks. Ken

Air in the fuel system will stop it. That's free to fix. I wouldn't do anything to it without a fuel pressure gauge. I hope you got a frame mount pump with a big line kit.

You could flip the drain lever on the fuel filter canister and see if anything comes out (if not its a lift pump), then drain it and cycle the key and see if or how fast it fills up..

If you have a cat convertor, you have a 04.5.. if you still have the tag on the valve cover its will say either 555 or 600 tq..

The 2004.0 have only a muffler. The 2004.5 have a muffler and a cat converter. I am always suspicious of taking these trucks to the Stealerships. FWIK, these trucks can run if the fuel pump is not working, its easy to check. The CPU will suck fuel. Did they check rail pressure? How about the injectors? IMO, in this case, the dealer's mechanics should be able to diagnose and tell you what is wrong before throwing expensive dealer parts on the truck. You can leave this dealership with an expensive bill.

IIRC the truck will run just off the injection pump. so your lift pump could be perfect and have years left in its life. make sure you get the old lift pump back since it could still be good.

Have them give you an estimate of any work to be done before you approve spending your money on the repairs. That way, you can only pay for the estimate if you decide to go somewhere else.

Thanks for all the answers the dealer replaced the lift pump and the truck seems to be running good hope this is the last time at the dealer just hard to find a repair shop that works on diesel trucks. Thanks Ken
