2004.5 exhaust brake w/48RE

I have been doing a lot of online research about an exhaust brake for my 2004.5 CTD. What is it about the 2004 year that with the 48RE tranny that is the problem? So far I have yet to get a decent answer from any manufactor. I called my local Dodge dealer and they just laughed! I wished now I would have got a six speed. Any 2004.5 48RE CTD owners with exhaust brakes, I would appreciate your insight!

There are some manufactures that make kits for your truck to have the ability to use an exhaust brake. I think BD makes one? Some one will chime in with a better answer.

BTW it is in the computer that won't let the pre 06 trucks have exhuast brakes.

I run the PacBrake on my 04.5 and love it. I leave it on all the time even when not towing and it is nice to go down a steep grade and not touch the brakes at all. It isn't really loud inside the truck. I installed the TripleLok Commander with it, and the best part about that is the warmup feature. Really helps on cold mornings!

yea, the triplelok commander is what I was trying to think of. What does that TL commander cost?

Nothing. An EB will work fine on the 48RE in that year. You obviously won't have a warranty but there is nothing that wll prevent one from working quite well if you understand what needs to be done.

For an EB to work effectively several things need to happen. Specifically the line pressures need to be up and stay up as long as the brake is being used, and, the TC needs to lock and stay locked.

BD Power makes 2 pieces that will work quite well with an EB and also help keep the power from killing the trans. The stock TC will handle it for a while but like all stock transmissions a good TC and VB will enhance an EB and extend the life of the trans. Specifically your truck can use a Pro-Loc and the Tow-Loc TC control to make an EB very effective.

Asking a dealer about what will work on a non-OEM device is about useless. Try a good dealer for the EB and they will set you upwith what works.
